Marvel directors react to Martin Scorsese hating the MCU

Earlier this week Martin Scorsese basically broke the internet when he declared that the films that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe are not cinema.

It didn’t take long for Marvel directors to respond to Scorsese’s remarks. But while they obviously didn’t agree with what he had to say they also went out of their way to still show their respect for the legendary director.

Starting with Guardians Of The Galaxy’s writer and director James Gunn, who after insisting that Scorsese was in his top 5 directors of all time, then declared that he was particularly annoyed that he made his disparaging remarks about the likes of Black Panther, Iron Man and Avengers: Endgame, even though he open admits he hasn’t actually watched all of them.

Gunn was then joined in Marvel’s rebuttal by Joss Whedon, who oversaw The Avengers and Avengers: Age Of Ultron, as he took to Twitter to write …

Simu Liu, who will star as Shang-Chi in 2021’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings for Marvel, also decided to weigh in on the debate, but admittedly in a much more humorous fashion.

Why were all of these Marvel cohorts so annoyed at Scorsese, though?

Because after being asked about his thoughts on Marvel by Empire, Scorsese responded, “I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.”

“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Unfortunately for Marty, Marvel films don’t show any signs of slowing down, as Avengers: Endgame recently toppled Avatar to become the highest grossing film of all time.
