IMAX Enhanced will finally stream Avengers: Endgame 'as the filmmakers intended' (exclusive)

From Friday, 12 November, Disney+ will change the way you watch some of Marvel's biggest movies — including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame — thanks to the launch of IMAX Enhanced.

Thirteen movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Iron Man right up to 2021's Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings (making its Disney+ debut on 12 November) will be available to stream in IMAX Enhanced at no extra cost, and you don't need a special TV to do it.

But what is IMAX Enhanced? Put simply, it means the films will stream in the same aspect ratio they were created in for the bigger format IMAX screen — 1.90:1. That means no black bars 'letterboxing' the image at the top and bottom of your screen, giving you more picture and enhanced sound. You'll be watching the films the way the filmmakers intended.

"There really is more to see," Bruce Markoe, IMAX's Head of Post Production tells Yahoo about the IMAX Enhanced titles on Disney+.

"The movies aren't just being blown up to fill the screen. You're seeing more image, more visual effects, more details. It is 26% more image top and bottom. There's a lot that has to be created to fill that."

Ever since Christopher Nolan shot segments of 2008's The Dark Knight using IMAX cameras — including that incredible Joker bank heist — blockbuster filmmakers have been falling over themselves to create sequences specifically for the larger screen format.

"The filmmakers are using that as a creative tool to basically design selected sequences to open up, to become more immersive, so it becomes part of the storytelling," Markoe adds. "It becomes a punctuation mark, if you will, to help accent those special sequences in the movie that will benefit from being more immersive."

This culminated in directors Joe and Anthony Russo shooting the one-two punch of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame entirely with IMAX cameras. With IMAX Enhanced launching on Disney+, subscribers can finally see the full image at home just as the Russos intended.

To get the best experience with IMAX Enhanced films in Disney+, Markoe recommends watching them with a 4K HDR television as the films have been optimised for those, but he adds that anyone can get the increased frame size on whatever device they choose to stream on.

"They shot the films with the IMAX cameras," Markoe explains. "And when they were shooting it they knew the framing that people were going to see at IMAX, they liked that more immersive IMAX experience. The filmmakers are really embracing this format. They're optimising their films for this format."

"IMAX is not changing the movie because we want to change it," he adds. "This is absolutely 100% done by the filmmakers in every case. They're in control of it. So what you're seeing and what you're hearing is what the filmmakers intended in an IMAX experience."

Although the IMAX Enhanced experience on Disney+ only extends to the thirteen Marvel Studios movies at the moment, Markoe says this launch is just the first step in a wider plan that may see other titles streaming in the format down the line.

Friday, 12 November is Disney+ Day where subscribers will get to see some unmissable and exclusive content including special features from some of their biggest brands, including Frozen, Luca, Home Alone and Marvel.
