Mark Ruffalo has said his return to the role of Hulk in Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series What If...? is “still in the works”, but revealed he is yet to receive a script.

The animated series — announced as part of Marvel’s Phase Four at last year’s Comic-Con — is set to focus on a selection of hypothetical scenarios that could’ve sent the Marvel Cinematic Universe in different directions.

Popular stories in the What If...? comic book run include the survival of Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben and a reality in which the Hulk was killed by Wolverine.

Jeffrey Wright will narrate the series as a member of the Watcher race, with most of the key cast of the Marvel movies expected to appear in some capacity.

Ruffalo told Yahoo Movies UK he is looking forward to returning to the MCU for What If...?, stating: “I love that world and those people.”

He added: “I haven't got a script for it yet. It's a what if. What if this happened? What if that happened? How would that change the Marvel Universe?

“But I don't know what the specifics are yet.”

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has explained that the show — which has already been greenlit for a second season — will focus on pivotal events in the MCU.

One episode will be based on what would happen if Peggy Carter had been injected with super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers.

The series is expected to debut on Disney+ in the summer of 2021, with episodes released on a weekly basis rather than in a whole-season dump.

Ruffalo is currently promoting his role as environmental law attorney Rob Bilott in Todd Haynes’ based-on-truth drama Dark Waters.

Bilott began a legal battle against chemical company DuPont in the 1990s when he uncovered evidence that a compound used in its factories had contaminated the water supply in West Virginia.

It was later discovered that the compound, known as PFOA, was linked to a series of serious medical conditions in humans, including testicular cancer and ulcerative colitis.

The movie also stars Anne Hathaway as Bilott’s wife, Tim Robbins as the boss of his law firm and Bill Camp as the farmer who first alerts Bilott to the contamination.

Dark Waters is in UK cinemas from 28 February.
