Margot Robbie and David Ayer to reunite on DC female team-up movie Gotham City Sirens
If you’re a Harley Quinn fan, do we have news for you, puddin’. Not only is she coming back to the big screen, but it looks like she’s bringing Catwoman and Poison Ivy with her.
While we’ve known for some time that an all-female DC Extended Universe movie was in the works, with Margot Robbie producing as well as reprising her ‘Suicide Squad’ role, The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that the film in question will be ‘Gotham City Sirens.’
In addition, THR tell us that ‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer will also return to call the shots on the movie, which has been written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (also screenwriter on the upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’).
DC Comics fans will be familiar with the ‘Gotham City Sirens’ title from a popular series centred on Harley, Ivy and Selina Kyle as bad girl BFFs in Batman’s iconic home town.
Whilst THR’s report does not confirm that Poison Ivy and Catwoman will be in the film, it seems unlikely that Warner Bros/DC would use the title otherwise. In any case, it is stressed the film “will showcase the top female villains from the DC stable” – and surely that line-up wouldn’t be complete without them.
Earlier reports have also suggested that the Birds of Prey – an all-female superheroine team including Black Canary, Huntress and Oracle (AKA the former Batgirl, Barbara Gordon) – will co-star in the film.
While there’s no casting news, nor any production or release dates yet announced for ‘Gotham City Sirens,’ the project is reportedly “on the fast track.” A ‘Suicide Squad’ sequel and a ‘Deadshot’ solo movie starring Will Smith are also said to be in the pipeline.
Despite middling reviews, ‘Suicide Squad’ proved a substantial commercial success, earning just under $746 million (approx £589 million) at the global box office.
It also proved a major breakthrough role for Margot Robbie, and massively boosted the popularity of Harley Quinn: amongst other accolades, she became the most popular Halloween costume of 2016.
