Jonah Hill in early talks for the Riddler or Penguin in 'The Batman'

Jonah Hill is said to be in early discussions for the villain role in Matt Reeves' The Batman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, talks are at an 'early and sensitive stage' because who Hill would play remains in the air, though it's said that both the Riddler and the Penguin are being discussed as possibilities. Movie blog Collider says it’s definitely The Riddler, but it remains unconfirmed by Warner Bros.

THR goes on to say that while the movie will be a 'grounded' version of Bruce Wayne, it will also feature 'many villains.'

Jim Carrey has previously played the Riddler, aka Edward Nygma, in Batman Forever, while Danny DeVito donned terrifying make-up as the Penguin in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns.

Director Reeves, who rebooted the Planet of the Apes movies, has previously spoken of a 'rogues gallery' for the film.

Also in talks is Hunger Games and James Bond star Jeffrey Wright, who is in line to play Gotham's chief of police, Commissioner Gordon.

Robert Pattinson was announced as the new Bruce Wayne over the summer, having reportedly clinched the role over X-Men star Nicholas Hoult.

Reeves' vision for the reboot of Batman, after Ben Affleck stepped down from the role, appears to be different from anything we might have seen before.

He told web show New Trailer Buzz back in 2018: “I think there’s a chance to do an almost noir-driven, detective version of Batman that is point of view driven in a very, very powerful way that is hopefully going to connect you to what’s going inside of his head, and inside of his heart.”

It's due for release in June, 2021.
