Iron Man 3 becomes fifth highest-grossing film ever

Downey Jr's paypacket is put into perspective with mega-grossing sequel

'Iron Man 3' is now the fifth highest-grossing film of all time.

The wildly popular Marvel Studios sequel, starring Robert Downey Jr as billionaire playboy Tony Stark, has so far raked in a colossal $1.147 billion (£760 million) in box office revenue around the world.

As it stands, the top five all-time highest-grossing films are:

1. 'Avatar' - $2.782 billion (£1.84 billion)
2. 'Titanic' - $2.185 billion (£1.44 billion)
3. 'Avengers Assemble' - $1.511 billion (£1 billion)
4. 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two' - $1.341 billion (£888 million)
5. 'Iron Man 3' - $1.147 billion (£760 million)

It now means that Marvel has two films in the top five, while the sequel to 'Avengers Assemble', due in May 2015, will likely do similar business.

Interestingly, however, out of the current top five films, only one appears in the list of highest-grossing domestic films in the US when adjusting for inflation.

'Titanic' lands at number five in that list, with 'Gone With The Wind' at the top, which made $1.6 billion in today's money in the US alone.

Then comes 'Star Wars' which made $1.4 billion, 'The Sound of Music' which made $1.13 billion and 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial' which made $1.12 billion.
