Everything we know about Incredibles 3
Pixar's superhero family is heading back to the big screen, with a sequel officially announced at D23. Here's what we know...
There were plenty of eye-catching Disney announcements at the 2024 D23 Expo. However, animation fans may well have been most excited to learn about a brand new movie in the works over at Pixar: Incredibles 3.
The Incredibles definitely stands among Pixar's most beloved franchises, with the 2004 original and its 2018 sequel held in very high esteem. The antics of the Parr family entertained a whole generation of kids in the noughties and quite possibly entertained that audience's own children 14 years later. Pixar has pulled the same trick with Toy Story already.
So let's dive in and find out what we know about Incredibles 3 and the return of the real first family of the superhero world — with all due respect to the Fantastic Four.
When could Incredibles 3 be released?
At this stage, we don't have a confirmed release date for Incredibles 3. Disney, however, revealed at the D23 event in August 2024 that the franchise will return to our screens soon.
This shouldn't be much of a surprise after the 2018 sequel Incredibles 2 soared to the heights of $1.42bn (£1.11bn) at the global box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated movies ever made. Pixar was always going to pull the trigger on another adventure for the Parr family.

Animated movies like this typically take a few years to develop and produce, though, so fans likely have a bit of a wait ahead of them. Or alternatively, that's plenty of time to rewatch the first two films over and over again. Every cloud and all that.

Brad Bird directed the first two Incredibles movies and we know from Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter's announcement at D23 that Bird is currently developing the threequel as well.
Bird has been central to the Incredibles movies, serving as writer and director on both entries so far. The fact that he's involved again with this third film will be a real vote of confidence for fans. It just wouldn't be The Incredibles without his guiding creative force behind it all.
Who is in the Incredibles 3 cast?
As of yet, we don't have any confirmed cast members for Incredibles 3. However, it's almost certain that Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter will return to voice Mr Incredible and his wife Elastigirl. We'd also put a lot of money on Bird stepping out from behind the director's chair to reprise the voice of his fan-favourite costume designer Edna Mode.

Samuel L Jackson also spoke on the press tour for the second movie about how he'd be more than happy to show up again as Mr Incredible's superhero pal Frozone. He even wants an origin story for the friendship between those characters, which would be an interesting change of direction.
As for the younger members of the Incredibles family, things are less sure. Sarah Vowell has played Violet Parr in the first two movies, so is likely to return. However, the role of her younger brother Dash has been shared by two stars due to the long gap between movies, with Huckleberry Milner replacing Spencer Fox for Incredibles 2.
Sophia Bush, who played young superhero Voyd in Incredibles 2, told Entertainment Weekly in 2018 that "we’re all pulling for" a third movie and suggested she would want to explore Voyd's bond with Violet if she was given the chance to return. Well, fingers crossed.
What is the plot of Incredibles 3?
While there was 14 years between the first two Incredibles movies in reality, the sequel's timeline picked up immediately after the original film. The conclusion of the sequel involved superheroes gaining their public respect and recognition once again.

With that in mind, it's likely that Incredibles 3 will jump a little further into the future. Jack-Jack won't be an infant any more, so his unpredictable powers could very much be the jumping-off point for a future narrative. Alternatively, there's the origin story idea Jackson mentioned, which seems less likely given the fact the young Parrs would be excluded.
But Pixar has remained tight-lipped on plot for now, so we'll have to await an update from them before we know any more about what will happen in Incredibles 3.
Incredibles 3 will arrive in cinemas, but doesn't yet have a confirmed release date.
