How Chris Hemsworth Put John Krasinski Off Playing Captain America

For five years now, US actor Chris Evans has been synonymous with Marvel’s elder superhero Captain America – but it might not have been so.

Naturally, Evans was one among many young actors to have been in line for the title role of 2011′s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ and one particular contender came pretty close to beating him – John Krasinski, star of ’13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi’ and ‘The Office US.’

However, it seems Krasinski himself came to the realisation that being a superhero wasn’t really for him – and speaking to Conan O’Brien, the actor revealed the moment he made up his mind.

“It was a big deal for me, because first of all, I love those Marvel movies. I love superheroes. I love imagination, so when they asked me to test they actually allowed me to put on the suit. I was on a set, it was all very interesting…

“But I remember the only bummer that was, I was putting on the suit just watching it and like this is so amazing and I got about right to my waist, I was still shirtless and feeling pretty good about myself, wasn’t [in] ‘13 Hours’ [shape] yet but felt pretty good.

“And all of a sudden Chris Hemsworth walked by as Thor and went ‘Hey mate.’ And I went ‘I’m good, this is stupid, I shouldn’t, it’s okay, I’m not going to be Captain America, it’s fine.’”

One can hardly blame Krasinski for feeling a little intimidated – though we might stress that a quick online image search will reveal that Hemsworth wasn’t always so big and beefy as we know him today.

Perhaps ironically, Krasinski’s wife Emily Blunt also came very close to playing a Marvel superhero, having reportedly been director Jon Favreau’s first choice for Black Widow in ‘Iron Man 2.’

Krasinski’s next action hero role will be in an Amazon TV series based on Tom Clancy’s CIA agent Jack Ryan.
