HBO Max planning new 'Green Lantern' TV series

The Green Lantern is to make a comeback thanks to HBO's new streaming platform HBO Max.

Greg Berlanti will be behind the series, reports Variety, the man behind the DC Arrowverse shows on US network The CW, and also producer and co-writer of the 2011 Warner Bros movie.

Not only that, but he will also be producing a series based on the veteran comic series Strange Adventures.

“Both of these original DC properties we’ll be creating for HBO Max will be unlike anything seen on television,” Berlanti said in a statement.

“An anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist, and, in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can’t reveal any more about that just yet.”

Strange Adventures first emerged in the 1950s, and latterly featured storylines from comic book legends like Brian Bolland, Dave Gibbons and Jim Starlin, as well as superheros like Captain Comet, Star Hawkins and Atomic Knights.

But while Strange Adventures is something of an unknown quantity on screen, Green Lantern not so much.

A movie version arrived in 2011, with Ryan Reynolds playing Hal Jordan, a human fighter pilot who is selected to join the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic law enforcement organisation.

Given a special ring that affords him superpowers, Reynolds tussled with supervillain Parallax (voiced by Clancy Brown).

The film was a disaster.

It made $219 million, but cost a sturdy $200 million, resulting is a huge financial loss for Warner Bros after costs were added, and was panned mercilessly by critics.

A planned sequel was quickly canned.
