Ghostbusters actress Alice Drummond dies aged 88

Alice Drummond, character actress best known for her opening scene cameo as a librarian in the original 1984 ‘Ghostbusters,’ has passed away.

The actress’s friend and executor June Gable tells The New York Times that Drummond died from “complications” sustained from a recent fall.

It may come as a surprise that Drummond was 88 at the time of her passing, given that her best remembered role was as an elderly woman who memorably has the socks scared off her by the spook in the basement of the New York Library. In fact, she was aged only 56 at the time.

Drummond continued to play characters older than her years in such films as ‘Funny Farm,’ ‘Awakenings,’ ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ and most recently ‘Furry Vengeance.’

The actress also worked extensively in television from the 1960s through to the 2000s, with appearances in shows including ‘Dark Shadows,’ ‘The Equalizer,’ ‘Kate and Allie,’ ‘Grace Under Fire,’ ‘Law and Order,’ ‘Spin City’ and ‘Boston Legal.’

Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in May 1928, Drummond passed away this past Wednesday, 30 November, in The Bronx, New York City, and reportedly leaves behind no immediate family. Even so, we extend our deepest condolences to all who knew her.
