You spend ages waiting for one new Marvel TV series to come along, then all of a sudden two arrive one after the other. No sooner has WandaVision wrapped up its nine mind-bending episodes than another superhero show bursts out of the gate on 19 March.
Action packed and eagerly awaited, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier could be a huge hit for Marvel, judging by the current hype levels online.
The show’s Super Bowl promo racked up 125 million views within 24 hours, more than double WandaVision’s 53 million for its trailer debut after the Primetime Emmys.
The Falcon and the Winter Solider picks up from the finale of Avengers: Endgame, when Captain America decided to literally live in the past and shoved his trusty shield into the hands of someone else.
Here is everything you need to know about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
What is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the second of Marvel’s streaming series, hot on the heels of WandaVision.
The show is set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and shares continuity with the movies in that franchise.
It will follow characters Sam Wilson (The Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier) as they come to terms with a world in which Captain America has hung up his shield.
Who stars in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?
Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their roles as Wilson and Barnes respectively. They are joined by Emily VanCamp as agent Sharon Carter, who appeared in the Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War movies.
Daniel Brühl is back as the villainous terrorist Zemo, having been one of the many highlights of Civil War.
The main cast is rounded off by Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street) as John Walker — known as US Agent in the Marvel comics — who is Captain America’s official successor.
What’s the plot of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier?
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America (Chris Evans) handed his shield to Wilson, but it doesn’t look like he’ll keep his hands on it for the duration of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
He and Barnes team up to take down Zemo and a group of supervillains known as the Flag-Smashers, in an adventure that leads them all over the globe.
Following the albeit rather welcome left-turn of WandaVision, Marvel appear to be returning to firmer ground here, much in the mode of the Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie, which set the tone for the main thrust of the MCU thereafter.
The trailers and TV spots promise explosions, exploding helicopters, high-speed train fights and lots of buddy cop shenanigans. It’s hard to ignore the Lethal Weapon vibes of this one.
When is The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on and how can I watch it?
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is available to stream on Disney+ and the first episode will be available on the platform on Friday, 19 March.
There are six episodes of the series, one dropping each week until 23 April.
