Emilia Clarke stars in first 'Last Christmas' trailer and it might be her most personal role yet

The first trailer for Last Christmas has dropped starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.

The new romantic-comedy, featuring the music of George Michael and written by Emma Thompson, follows Clarke’s Kate, a struggling singer working at a Christmas shop after recovering from an illness that nearly killed her.

Be warned though, it’s one of those trailers that seems to give away the entire plot of the film. You can watch it below.

In real life, the Game of Thrones star suffered her own near-death experiences with brain aneurysms, the first of which was diagnosed in 2011 when she was just 24.

“The diagnosis was quick and ominous,” Clark wrote in a op-ed for The New Yorker.

“A subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening type of stroke, caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain. I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture.

If I was to live and avoid terrible deficits, I would have to have urgent surgery,” she said, “and, even then, there were no guarantees.”

Clarke had a second brain operation in 2013 and has since started a charity to raise money and awareness for those recovering from brain injuries and strokes.

It’s unclear what illness her character in Last Christmas has but we do know that the trauma causes her to lose her way in life. That is until she meet’s Henry Golding’s charming Tom who in true rom-com fashion sweeps Kate off her feet.

The film is co-written by Bryonny Kimmings and Emma Thompson who also stars as Clarke’s mother Adelia while Michelle Yeoh plays the owner of the Christmas shop Kate works at.

The film’s title is taken from the George Michael song and several more tracks of the late pop star’s will feature too.

It’s directed by Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters’ Paul Feig.

To coincide with the film’s release, Thompson and her actor husband Greg Wise will publish a collection of personal essays about the meaning of Christmas on 31st October 2019.

The book, also called Last Christmas, will feature contributions from Meryl Streep, Bill Bailey, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman and Caitlin Moran and the proceeds will go to Crisis and The Refugee Council

Last Christmas is scheduled to be released on 15 November, 2019.
