With Marvel series Hawkeye finishing in December and the first episode of The Book of Boba Fett arriving as a nice present in between Christmas and New Year, Disney+ subscribers have been spoiled with big event series of late.
The January slate for the platform includes the streaming debut of last year's MCU hit Eternals, with Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao bringing a whole new ensemble of super-powered beings to audiences. Meanwhile, on the small screen, there's a decidedly weirder Marvel property — and Jeff Goldblum is back too.
Here's everything Disney is bringing to its streaming platform in January...
Original movies coming to Disney+ UK in January 2022
Eternals (12 January)
Chloe Zhao's debut in the MCU was a big swing for cinema's most enormous franchise, giving a filmmaker known for her low-key, character-driven pieces the keys to something gargantuan. But the film is a fascinating one, using its titular team of superheroes to explore the notion of what it means to be a hero and provide surprisingly murky shades around the actions of the Eternals — immortal beings with enormous power.
She's assisted by a brilliant cast, led by Gemma Chan and including the likes of Richard Madden, Brian Tyree Henry, Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek.
Original TV shows coming to Disney+ UK in January 2022
Big Sky S2 (weekly from 5 January via Star)
Thriller series Big Sky — created by Big Little Lies helmer David E. Kelley — was a big part of the launch slate for the Star platform of Disney+ and, now, private detectives Cassie Dewell and Jenny Hoyt are back for a second instalment. This time around, they discover complex wrinkles and added mysteries surrounding a Montana car wreck.
The Real Queens of Hip Hop: The Women Who Changed the Game (14 January via Star)
An all-female line-up of interviewees takes centre stage in this wide-ranging documentary special, which explores the trailblazing women of hip-hop music all the way from the 1970s through to today.
Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Hawkeye (19 January)
Hawkeye was another visually spectacular and thrilling Marvel series and so, as has become traditional, Disney+ has provided a special look behind the scenes of the show. Expect plenty of archery action with Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, as well as a look at how the brilliant fight scenes came together and the genesis of those big cameos.
Queens (weekly from 19 January via Star)
This musical drama series picks up the lives of four former hip-hop stars, more than 20 years after their heyday in the spotlight. The protagonists of Queens were once known as the Nasty Bitches and took the music world by storm in the 1990s. Now estranged from each other and moving into middle-age, they decide to work on a potential reunion.
The World According to Jeff Goldblum S2 E6-10 (19 January)
Jeff Goldblum's endless sense of wonder anchors another five episodes of his documentary series, in which he takes on a series of different topics. This time around, the themes include birthdays, motorbikes and "tiny things".
Insania S1 (26 January via Star)
This Brazilian series is led by Carol Castro as a police officer who ends up at a mysterious clinic after a tragedy in her family. In investigating why she has ended up at the clinic, she uncovers a frightening conspiracy.
Marvel’s Hit Monkey (26 January via Star)
Hit Monkey is just a normal, average TV series about a snow monkey teaming up with the ghost of an assassin in order to exact revenge throughout the underworld of Tokyo. Pretty standard fare, right? Fred Tatasciore plays the titular character, with Jason Sudeikis as the voice of his deceased assassin mentor. It arrived to strong reviews on Hulu last year and is now set to become available to UK viewers through Disney+.
The Resident S5 (weekly from 26 January via Star)
The bureaucracy and complications of the American healthcare industry sit at the heart of this medical drama set at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital, which is back for another season.
