Disney sets new box office record with 'Toy Story 4'

Disney’s Toy Story 4 has crossed the $1 billion threshold at the global box office 55 days after it was released. Its worldwide total gross is now $1,001,723,837 (£824,118,200), according to Box Office Mojo, following its release on 21 June.

The Pixar sequel starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, becomes the fifth Disney film to hit the billion dollar mark in 2019 so far, alongside The Lion King ($1,346bn), Aladdin ($1,035bn), Avengers: Endgame ($2,795bn) and Captain Marvel ($1,128bn).

This is the first time in Hollywood history a single studio has released more than four billion dollar movies in one calendar year.

With Frozen II and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also likely to hit ten-figures, Disney looks set to smash that record ending the year with seven billion-busting blockbusters.

A total of six films have made over a billion at the box office in 2019 so far, with Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Far From Home the only non-Disney release in that hallowed group. It’s the first time in history more than five films have made that much, besting 2015 and 2018’s record of five films in the billion-dollar club.

In the U.K. and Ireland Toy Story 4 has made £58.7M to date overtaking Incredibles 2 to become the second biggest animated film ever in the UK. With its 2010 gross of £74.9m, Toy Story 3 is still the highest grossing animated film of all time in the U.K. and Ireland.

Currently, Toy Story 4 is the 9th highest-grossing animated movie of all-time at the global box office - if you count Jon Favreau’s 2019 The Lion King as an animated film.

With a reported budget of $200 million, Toy Story 4 has made a comfortable profit for Disney, alongside its stablemates, in the year that the studio acquired rivals 20th Century Fox for a reported $71.3bn.
