Denis Villeneuve wants to do a 'Blade Runner' spin-off

Denis Villeneuve has revealed his interest in overseeing a new Blade Runner movie.

However, rather than simply being a direct follow-up to his sequel Blade Runner 2049, the French Canadian director told Empire that he would only be interested in returning to this world if the movie wasn’t connected to the originals.

“It’s such an inspiring place, the Blade Runner world … The problem I have is the word ‘sequel’. I think cinema needs original stories.”

“But if you ask me if I’d like to revisit this universe in a different way, I can say yes. It would need to be a project on its own. Something disconnected from both other movies. A detective noir story set in the future.”

Villeneuve almost made it seem like it was his destiny to eventually make another Blade Runner movie, as he went on to tell the magazine, “I wake up sometimes in the night dreaming about it.”

While it is commendable that Villeneuve is adamant about seeing more original movies from Hollywood, and hopefully has several ideas of his own lined up to soon put into production, it should be noted that his upcoming follow-up to Blade Runner 2049 is actually a remake of David Lynch’s 1984 sci-fi epic Dune, which itself was based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 book.

Fingers crossed that news of either another Blade Runner movie, or of an original film from Villeneuve, will be announced around the time that Dune is released on December 18, 2020.

Although the fact that the filmmaker previously said that he wanted to adapt Dune into two films suggests that he’s going to be pretty busy for the foreseeable future.
