DC FanDome: 'Wonder Woman 1984' trailer reveals Kristen Wiig as Cheetah

Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah was revealed in all of her villainous glory during a new trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 unveiled at the DC FanDome virtual event.

The feline baddie is seen in various forms throughout the trailer as Wiig’s Barbara Ann Minerva metamorphoses into the cat-like creature she appears as in the final scenes of the teaser.

Cheetah is seen joining forces with Pedro Pascal’s evil businessman Max Lord, who promises to “change the world” without much regard for rules.

Wiig is seen facing off with Gal Gadot’s Diana and even manages to stop the hero’s trademark lasso in its tracks.

The trailer also provides glimpses of several action set pieces, as well as Steve Trevor trying on a variety of questionable outfits as he adjusts to jumping straight from the First World War to the 1980s.

Gadot is seen in a variety of costumes — including golden battle armour — in a trailer that spans multiple locations including, of course, the Amazonian home of Themyscira.

It was the Cheetah reveal, though, that prompted most discussion, with some opting to compare her CGI appearance unfavourably to last year’s widely panned Cats adaptation.

The trailer marked the conclusion of a lively panel discussion, in which director Patty Jenkins was joined by Gadot, Wiig, Pine and Pascal.

The cast answered fan questions and were treated to special appearances from tennis star Venus Williams and Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman on TV in the 1970s.

Carter said: “When my daughter saw Gal as Wonder Woman, she said: ‘I finally get it. I finally understand why everyone idolises you. I finally get why Wonder Woman means so much to everyone.’”

Gadot described Carter as a “true life Wonder Woman” and revealed she refers to her predecessor as “Mama Bear”.

Pine, whose character died in the 2017 Wonder Woman movie, did not provide any information on how Steve Trevor returns, but did say he enjoyed being the fish out of water this time around.

He said: “That interesting curiosity was a good lesson for me as a human being to remind myself to open up and not be so cool.

“My job is to be in love with Gal, which is not a hard gig.”

Gadot, meanwhile, revealed that one of the action sequences proved to be particularly tricky when Wiig’s hairpiece got caught in her gauntlets.

The 35-year-old star spoke about the importance of the character when the cast were shown various fans appearing in cosplay as Wonder Woman.

“We’ve seen so many male superheroes, but we haven’t seen enough female superheroes,” Gadot said.

“For little girls, once they see it, they believe it. For little girls to be exposed to these types of movies, whether it’s Wonder Woman or any other female-driven movie in this genre, it’s so important. It’s so empowering.”

Wonder Woman 1984 was originally set for release in June 2020, but it was delayed until August as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and then shunted again.

The film is now set to be released in the UK on 2 October.
