David Cronenberg Horror Rabid To Be Remade By Soska Sisters
Just when you thought there were no 1970s horror movies left to remake - here comes a new take on David Cronenberg’s ‘Rabid.’
This redo of the 1977 Canadian production comes from two of the most prominent Canadian filmmakers working in horror today: twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska, the directorial duo behind 2012 cult hit ‘American Mary.’
‘Rabid’ was the fourth film from director David Cronenberg, and the second in a series of distinctive ‘body horror’ films on which he made his name, others including ‘Shivers,’ ‘The Brood’ and ‘Videodrome.’
The 1977 film starred pornographic actress Marilyn Chambers in one of her few (comparatively) mainstream roles, as a woman who receives an experimental skin graft after a motorcycle accident, which inadvertently makes her the host for a vampiric infection which quickly develops into a pandemic.
In addition to the remake, film company Somerville House Releasing plan to make an original TV series around ‘Rabid,’ although there is no indication as to whether the Soskas will be involved in both.
The directors tell Variety, “The work of David Cronenberg is legendary and ‘Rabid’ is much more than just a horror movie. The real message of his film is powerful, and even more pivotal as we look at the world around us today.
“It’s an honor to be involved in this love letter to his original, which we handle with the same respect as Paul Schrader’s ‘Cat People,’ Alexandre Aja’s ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ and John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing.‘”
Producer Paul Lalonde declares, “When you’re remaking a classic horror film like ‘Rabid,’ you have to make sure you don’t compromise when it comes to the director.
“The Soskas are among the hottest young directors in the horror genre and I couldn’t be happier with our choice.”
Since 2012′s ‘American Mary,’ Jen and Sylvia Soska have directed two films for WWE - ‘See No Evil 2′ and ‘Vendetta’ - and hosted the Blumhouse-produced TV show ‘Hellevator.’
