Danny Boyle confirms a follow-up to 'The Beach' has been penned for TV
Danny Boyle has confirmed that a follow-up to The Beach has been penned.
The 2000 movie, based on Alex Garland’s novel of the same name, was a box office hit but the reviews weren’t as kind.
It was written by Boyle’s long-time collaborator John Hodges and starred Leonardo DiCaprio as American backpacker Richard who comes across an isolated society hidden away on a paradise island in Thailand.
Boyle told the Independent that there is plans for a TV prequel and the script has been penned by Amy Seimetz.

Seimetz who appeared in the recent Pet Sematary remake, directed a few episodes of Donald Glover’s hit FX series Atlanta as well co-created the Starz series The Girlfriend Experience.
“The Beach may come back," Boyle said. "[Seimetz] has taken The Beach and made a prequel for television. It’s the same character but it’s set now, so 20 years later – it’s a bit of a headf**k."
The Beach was set around 1996 but the Yesterday director explains that the series will take place in 2016 but flash back to events that occurred before the film.
Seimetz’s series may well be what Alex Garland was referring to in a reddit AMA when asked about a possible sequel.
He revealed that “someone very talented” was working on “a possible adaptation,” of his 1995 book and that he was “really interested to see what they write.”

The author moved into the world of film writing himself after the release of The BEach, which was inspired by his own backpacking experience.
He not only penned Boyle’s 2002 film 28 Days Later but marked his directorial debut in 2014 with Ex Machina, followed-up with Annihilation for Netflix four years later.
Boyle also revealed that there were ideas to make a third movie in the 28 Days Later franchise.
His latest movie, Yesterday, is in cinemas from Friday.
