Dan Aykroyd Says New Ghostbusters Better Than Originals
‘Ghostbusters’ star Dan Aykroyd thinks the new movie is great.
It’s already dividing opinions way before its release – Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ faced a huge backlash following the reveal of its first official trailers.
But according to former-Ghostbuster Dan Aykroyd, there’s nothing to worry about.
“As originator of the original: Saw test screening of new movie,” he said via Whosay. “Apart from brilliant, genuine performances from the cast both female and male, it has more laughs and more scares than the first 2 films plus Bill Murray is in it!”

“As one of millions of man-fans and Ray Stantz,” he added, “I’m paying to see that and bringing all my friends!”
Of course, Aykroyd’s comments come just days after Melissa McCarthy responded to online trolls of the film as “people not having a [partner], not having friends, so they’re just sitting there and spewing hate into this fake world of the internet.”
Not exactly going to win over the critics…
But while the ‘Ghostbusters’ cast and crew have received plenty of sexist, misogynistic abuse at the hands of their detractors, it has to be said – the trailer didn’t exactly win over the more rational fans, either.
However, Dan Aykroyd’s softly-softly approach might go some way towards bridging the gap between the new movie and fans of the original. After all, he’s Ray Stantz – hero to many of the ‘manboys’ already slammed by McCarthy.
And he’s one of the few people to already see the movie.
But his comments aren’t exactly unbiased.
Aykroyd will reportedly make a cameo appearance in the movie, as well as earning Executive Producer credits as the creator of the original movie. And that undoubtedly means that he has a vested interested in the film’s success.
But could there be a glimmer of hope in Aykroyd’s comments?
Even if ‘Ghostbusters’ doesn’t manage to top the original film’s in terms of critical or box office success, there could still be a good movie in there somewhere. Whether or not you can find it amongst the wacky CGI and oddly racial stereotypes remains to be seen.
But for all our sakes, we hope ‘Ghostbusters’ will be as good as Aykroyd says.
‘Ghostbusters’ heads to cinemas on 11 July 2016.
