Chris Hemsworth debuts hilarious video of 'Fat Thor' performing Johnny Cash

Chris Hemsworth stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where he shared a never-before-seen video of himself as “Fat Thor” from Avengers: Endgame performing Johnny Cash’s version of the Nine Inch Nails hit ‘Hurt’.

At that point in the movie, Thor is depressed, drinking too much, and has really let himself go. Hemsworth explained he was just killing time in his trailer between takes and really, what better song to help him get into character?

“I method acted that whole thing,” Hemsworth joked. He added that of course Thor would play that song at the time because it’s “The saddest song in the world.”

This isn’t the first piece of behind-the-scenes footage from the movie taken by a cast member, but it may be the strangest.

No word yet on whether or not Hemsworth will release it as a single, but here’s to hoping.

This new schlubby look for Hemsworth’s character was introduced in Avengers: Endgame which featured a “five years later” timeline jump following the events of Avengers: Infinity War.

Having failed to undo the actions of Thanos’ “snap” that vaporised half of all living creatures, Thor falls into a funk of depression, leading to some significant weight gain for his character who gets dubbed “Lebowski Thor” by Tony Stark in a reference to the Coens’ stoner classic.

Hemsworth recently revealed that the weight gain was originally meant to be reversed partway through Endgame, but he fought to keep it in.

“I enjoyed that version of Thor,” he told Variety. “It was so different than any other way I played the character. And then it took on a life of its own.”

“Physically, it was a good three hours in hair and makeup,” he added. “Then the prosthetic suit, particularly for the shirt-off scene, that was a big silicone that weighed about 90 pounds. It was certainly exhausting. I had weights on my hands and ankles just to have my arms and legs swing differently when I shuffled along through the set.”

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film’s screenwriters, defended the new heavier Thor from accusations of “fat-shaming” the character, saying his physical state was a commentary on depression.

“We wondered, ‘Okay, well, what if he does become a sort of depressive alcoholic?’ And the weight gain was just part and parcel of that state of mind. We didn’t go, like, ‘Let’s chunk him up, it’ll be hilarious’,” Markus told Vulture.

“And we leave him in that state at the end of the movie. Even though he’s emotionally resolved … We fix his problem, and it’s not his weight.”

Chris Hemsworth’s new film Men In Black: International is in cinemas now.
