Cast react as 'Modern Family' confirmed to end after season 11

Season 11 of hit US sitcom Modern Family will be its last, ABC has confirmed.

Network president Karey Burke confirmed the news at the winter press tour of the 2019 Television Critics Association.

The show that made stars of Ty Burrell and Sofia Vergara is expected to return to screens this September, before winding up for good in May, 2020.

Beginning in 2009, the mockumentary-style, fourth wall-breaking sitcom, penned by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, followed the lives of the extended Pritchett family.

Starring former Married With Children star Ed O’Neill as patriarch Jay Pritchett, its ensemble also brought Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet to prominence.

Meanwhile, former (and current) child stars like Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Aubrey Frances Anderson-Emmons, Jeremy Maguire and Sarah Hyland all grew up on screen.

Cast-members have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the show.

Speaking to Yahoo in the US last week, Vergara said: “It’s been a pleasure and an honor to be able to play Gloria Pritchett on TV.

“I lived around a woman that reminded me a lot of Gloria. You know, very colorful, very passionate, very loud, very fun. I wouldn’t change anything about Gloria.”
