Captain America: Civil War crowned highest-grossing movie of 2016

‘Captain America: Civil War’ has been named the highest-grossing movie of 2016, having hauled in – wait for it – a massive $1.153 billion (around £931 million).

The Marvel sequel convincingly beat Disney’s ‘Finding Dory’ to the top spot, though the Pixar sequel made a perfectly respectable $1.028 billion (£830 million) worldwide.

The figures have been stacked up by The Hollywood Reporter, with ‘Zootropolis’ coming in third (£827 million), followed by ‘The Jungle Book’ (£781 million), and ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ (£707 million).

Yep, that’s four of the top five movies of 2016 coming from Disney, which all contributes to its startling $7 billion (£5.7 billion) haul in global ticket sales for the year – making that acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion seem something of a bargain.

Making up the rest of the top 10 are ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (£705 million), ‘Rogue One’, (£648 million, though it achieved this in just a couple of weeks), ‘Deadpool’ (£632 million), ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ (£627 million) and ‘Suicide Squad’ (£602 million).

However, it wasn’t all glory, with a rash of big budget movies this year having bombed rather horribly.

The remake of ‘Ben-Hur’, ‘Gods of Egypt’, ‘Allied’ and ‘The Finest Hours’ cost their studios over $1 billion.

And displaying the chasm between movies that did well, and movies that did not, big budget disappointments like ‘Warcraft’ and ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ have somehow made it into the top 20, despite not performing nearly as well as they had to in order to be considered a financial success.
