'Bohemian Rhapsody' was the most-watched home video in 2019

Not only did Bohemian Rhapsody clean up at the box office, it was also the most-watched movie at homes across the UK last year, even beating Avengers: Endgame.

The biopic movie of legendary British rock ban Queen, directed by Bryan Singer and starring soon-to-be Bond villain Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, sold 1.7 million copies in the UK.

That was a massive 400,000 more copies than the final chapter in the Avengers series, which sold 1.3 million.

According to data from the Entertainment Retailers Association, two thirds of those copies sold were on DVD or Blu-ray, with the remaining figure coming from download.

And while physical sales decreased – as expected as digital sales become the norm – spending on home viewing grew in the UK by 9.5 percent overall.

This is also thanks to the huge increase in subscription-based services like Netflix, Amazon and Now TV, with the figure spent up by 21.5 percent on last year.

By comparison, DVD and Blu-ray sales dropped by 22.6 percent, from £617 million in 2018, to £477.2 million in 2019.

Meanwhile, the rental DVD market continues to decline, dropping by 25 percent last year.
