Disney+ announces Boba Fett spin-off after character's 'The Mandalorian' appearance

Update: Disney has confirmed that the new Boba Fett series announced at the end of The Mandalorian S2 is a standalone series ‘set within the timeline of The Mandalorian.’

A logo for the new series was shared on the company’s official social media channels, along with confirmation that the show would be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez, who directed Chapter 14: The Tragedy.

There had been some confusion about the true nature of the new series, with many suggesting that it could be the third season of The Mandalorian by another name. A third season of The Mandalorian was also recently announced to arrive in December 2021.

The Book of Boba Fett was revealed in a post-credits scene following the season two finale of The Mandalorian, which debuted on the streaming platform on Friday.

The project, which could either be a series or a movie, is due to arrive in a year’s time, with a title card announcing it for December 2021.

Boba Fett has been primed for a spin-off for many years, with George Lucas originally working on developing a series before Lucasfilm was sold to Disney.

A live-action movie was subsequently announced, with Simon Kinberg in the frame and then James Mangold tapped to write and direct.

That project was canned when Disney opted to instead focus on The Mandalorian, which introduced Fett as a character during its second season.

Temuera Morrison, who first played Boba’s father Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, had a brief cameo in the season two opener before making lengthier appearances in more recent episodes.

Morrison now seems poised to take on the lead role in a series or movie of his own.

Fett has been a fan favourite character since his introduction in Empire Strikes Back — we’ll ignore his brief appearance in the Star Wars Holiday Special, for everyone’s sake — and subsequent death in Return of the Jedi.

His origin story was told in the prequel trilogy, where Boba was revealed to be a clone of his father, produced as part of the Republic’s army of clone troopers.

The news of The Book of Boba Fett comes just 24 hours after original Fett actor Jeremy Bulloch passed away at the age of 75.

Mark Hamill was among those to pay tribute to the performer on Twitter, describing Bulloch as “the quintessential English gentleman”.

He added: “A fine actor, delightful company and so kind to everyone lucky enough to meet or work with him. I will deeply miss him and am so grateful to have known him.”
