The biggest snubs and surprises at the 2019 BAFTAs

The 2019 BAFTAs took place on Sunday night and it was a fantastic night for The Favourite but the ceremony wasn’t without its surprises. These were the biggest shocks of the night.

Supporting Actor

Despite being on home soil, Richard E. Grant did not win Supporting Actor for his role in Can You Ever Forgive Me? as Mahershala Ali was given the award instead for playing Dr Don Shirley in Green Book.

Ali has won the equivalent award at the Golden Globes, SAG, and Critics Choice, so looks pretty set to win at the Oscars too.

Green Book

Green Book did not win quite as many awards as it had at previous awards shows, losing out in the Best Film and Best Original Screenplay category to British film The Favourite, Viggo Mortensen losing Best Actor to Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody.

Bohemian Rhapsody

Despite the popularity for the Queen biopic, and it being a British film, it surprisingly won only two out of seven nominations by picking up the Sound award too.

Spike Lee

Spike Lee earned his first ever BAFTA, after receiving his first ever nominations, for BlacKkKlansman. While he lost out on Best Director to Alfonso Cuaron, and Best Film, he did win for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Snubs

Amy Adams was snubbed for a seventh time at the BAFTAs after losing Supporting Actress for her performance in Vice to Rachel Weisz for The Favourite.

Vice had picked up six nominations but surprisingly only won in the editing category, which meant Christian Bale, Sam Rockwell and Adam McKay lost out in the Leading Actor, Supporting Actor and Adapted Screenplay category.

Hair and Make Up

It was a surprise that The Favourite won best Hair & Make-Up considering it hadn’t been nominated in the same category at the Oscars. It beat Vice and Mary Queen of Scots which both are up for Academy Awards.
