'Bend It Like Beckham' director Gurinder Chadha takes on Springsteen in 'Blinded By The Light' trailer

A new trailer has landed online for Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha’s Blinded By The Light, which follows a young English boy who finds himself through the music of Bruce Springsteen.

The film, co-written by journalist Sarfraz Manzoor and based on his memoir Greetings From Bury Park, premiered to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, with its approval score on Rotten Tomatoes currently set at 93%.

It’s the story, set in 1987, of British-Pakistani teenager Javed (Viveik Kalra), who channels the intolerance of his society and his pushy father into poetry

His life changes when a friend introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen and he finds echoes of his own life within the lyrics of the Born in the USA singer’s iconic tracks.

Chadha, who also directed teen romcom Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, shared the trailer online earlier today.

The film’s title comes from a track that was released on Springsteen’s debut album in 1973.

It hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in America and was a top ten hit on the UK Singles Chart.

Critics were wowed by Blinded By The Light, with The Wrap referring to it as “damn near irresistible” and EW calling it “a Technicolor ode to the power of music”.

At least one Springsteen fan on Twitter is very keen to see the film when it lands in cinemas.

As well as rising star Kalra in the cast are a selection of big name British stars including Hayley Atwell, Rob Brydon and Sally Phillips.

The film joins a selection of upcoming British musicals based on the work of famous artists, with Elton John biopic Rocketman arriving soon, followed by Yesterday, featuring the music of The Beatles.

Blinded By The Light is due to be released into UK cinemas on 9th August.
