Beauty and the Beast to feature Disney's first 'exclusively gay moment'

The live action ‘Beauty and the Beast’ remake is set to make history on March 17 as it features Disney’s first explicitly LGBT character.

Speaking to Attitude magazine, the film’s director Bill Condon confirmed that Gaston’s sidekick LeFou – as played by ‘Frozen’ star Josh Gad – harbours romantic feelings for the narcissistic villain, and it’s not just subtext.

“LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” says Condon in the magazine’s April edition.

“He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its pay-off at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

It’s been 80 years since Disney released its first feature-length film ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ and while many have speculated about Disney characters who may be homosexual in the past, this is the first time the studio has acknowledged a LGBT character on screen.
