Alec Baldwin says he's 'overjoyed' to have lost his job playing Donald Trump on 'SNL'

Now that Donald Trump has lost his bid for a second term as President of the United States, it means that Alec Baldwin is – or will soon be – out of a job.

Baldwin has lampooned the president on the veteran US sketch show Saturday Night Live since 2016.

But now it appears that the 30 Rock star's stint under the wig is coming to an end, and rather than being sad, he's delighted about it.

Tweeting over the weekend, Baldwin said: “I don’t believe I’ve ever been this overjoyed to lose a job before!”

He added: “It will be comforting when we have a President who doesn’t Tweet twice as much as I do ... They’re gonna need an enormous shipment of tissues sent to Mar-a-Lago.

“On to my next wish. That everyone who voted in this election maintains that commitment and votes in the 2022 midterm elections. Let’s keep this going!!!”

Baldwin took on the role at the tail end of Trump's 2016 election campaign, to the delight of fans of the show.

Memorable moments included the recreation of the presidential debate with Kate McKinnon's Hillary Clinton, during which Baldwin's Trump frequently sidled up behind his opponent, echoing Trump's peculiar behaviour in real life.

The role even won Baldwin his third Primetime Emmy in 2017, and a further nomination in 2018.

He had to spring into action for Saturday night's show, after president-elect Joe Biden's win was called just hours before cameras rolled.

In a recorded segment, Baldwin's Trump said: “As anyone who died halfway through Tuesday knows, I was re-elected president of the United States.”
