The release dates for films coming to UK cinemas in 2020

As lockdown restrictions begin to be eased around the UK and Ireland, cinema chains are preparing to reopen from July.

But what else can you expect to see filling up the multiplexes when cinemas reopen next month? Here’s the current blockbuster release schedule, which is subject to change.

Coming to cinemas in July

Black Water: Abyss - 10 July (previews from 4 July)

As a tropical storm flood an uncharted cave system, adventurers are trapped in the dark recesses underground, cut off from the outside world. As the waters rise they soon realise they aren’t alone, and their desperate attempt to escape turns into a frantic man and woman versus crocodile fight for survival.

Love Sarah - 10 July

Starring Celia Imrie, Shannon Tarbet, Shelley Conn, Rupert Penry Jones and Bill Paterson.

Determined to fulfil her late mother’s dream of opening a bakery in charming Notting Hill, 19-year-old Clarissa enlists the help of her mother’s best friend Isabella and her eccentric estranged grandmother Mimi. These three generations of women will need to overcome grief, doubts and differences to honour the memory of their beloved Sarah while embarking on a journey to establish a London bakery filled with love, hope and colourful pastries from all over the world.

Saint Frances - 10 July

Saint Frances follows the events of a summer when somewhat down-on-her-luck Bridget (O’Sullivan) is hired to babysit six year old Frances, played by Ramona Edith Williams. Saint Frances is also director Alex Thompson’s feature debut, and stars Lily Mojekwu (I Love Dick, Widows), Charin Alvarez and Max Lipchitz. Thompson and O’Sullivan said, "We're thrilled to be partnering with Vertigo and sharing Saint Frances with UK audiences. We hope it brings even a modicum of brightness to what is certainly an unprecedented time of strife and division.”

Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (4K remaster) - 12 July

The beloved 80s classic Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure has - for the first time ever - been gloriously restored in stunning 4K. This treasured time-travelling comedy stars Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as Bill and Ted respectively – a hopeless but lovable duo who have since become cult icons after gracing our screens for the first time more than 30 years ago.

Inception (re-release) - 17 July

Christopher Nolan’s 2010 sci-fi epic returns to cinemas for its tenth anniversary. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Tom Hardy, Inception is a heist movie like no other.

The Vigil - 17 July

Blumhouse’s The Vigil is set over the course of a long, dark night in Brooklyn’s Hassidic “Boro” Park neighbourhood, following Yakov (Dave Davis, True Detective), a former Hassid, who has lost his faith, and isn’t eager to go back to the insular religious community he only recently fled. But when Reb Shulem (Menashe Lustig), a rabbi and confidante, approaches Yakov and offers to pay him to be the shomer (watching over the dead body of a community member) for a recently deceased Holocaust survivor, he reluctantly accepts the job. Shortly after arriving at the dilapidated house, Yakov realises that something is very, very wrong. This will not be a quiet vigil.

Unhinged - 31 July

Unhinged takes an ordinary, everyday incident to its most terrifying conclusion in telling the story of a mother (Caren Pistorious, Slow West) who leans on her horn at the wrong time, to the wrong guy (Russell Crowe). ‘Road rage’ doesn't begin to describe what he's about to do to her and everyone she knows.

Proxima - 31 July

The story follows Sarah (Eva Green), a French astronaut training at the European Space Agency in Cologne. The only woman in the arduous training programme, she has been chosen to be part of the crew of a year-long space mission called ‘Proxima’. Putting enormous strain on her relationship with her seven-year-old daughter Stella (Zélie Boulant), the training begins to take its toll on them both as the life-changing launch looms ever closer.

Summerland - 31 July

Summerland follows the story of fiercely independent folklore investigator, Alice (Gemma Arterton) who secludes herself in her clifftop study, debunking myths using science to disprove the existence of other-worldly forces and magic. Consumed by her work, but also profoundly lonely, she is haunted by a love affair from her past.

Stage Mother - 31 July

Stage Mother sees conservative, Texas church-choir director Maybelline (Jacki Weaver, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, ANIMAL KINGDOM) inheriting her recently deceased son’s drag club, and surprising her closed-minded husband, and everyone else she knows, by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy.

In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open up and find new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother-figure to the club's flamboyant performers... until a surprise visit threatens to upend her new life.

Flash Gordon (4K remaster) - 31 July

Studiocanal is excited to announce the new 4k, Ultra High Definition restoration of Mike Hodge’s cult classic Flash Gordon (1980), in honour of the film’s 40th anniversary. The film is now confirmed to play at Picturehouse Central and in select cinemas from 31 July, it will then be released on 4K UHD Collector’s edition, Blu-ray, Steelbook, DVD and digital on 10 August.

TENET - 12 August

John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle Tenet. Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.

The Secret Garden - 14 August

The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx, Genius), a prickly and unloved 10-year-old girl, born in India to wealthy British parents. When they suddenly die, she is sent back to England to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven (Colin Firth) on his remote country estate deep in the Yorkshire moors. There, she begins to uncover many family secrets, particularly after meeting her sickly cousin Colin (Edan Hayhurst – Genius), who has been shut away in a wing of the house. Together, these two damaged, slightly misfit children heal each other through their discovery of a wondrous secret garden, lost in the grounds of Misselthwaite Manor. A magical place of adventure that will change their lives forever.

Mulan - 21 August

Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China’s legendary warrior to life in Disney’s Mulan, in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known.

Babyteeth - 21 August

Eliza Scanlan (Little Women, Sharp Objects) gives a star-making performance in this vibrant and spirited drama from director Shannon Murphy (Killing Eve). When seriously ill teenager Milla Finlay (Eliza Scanlan) falls in love with free-spirit Moses (Toby Wallace), it’s her parents, Henry (Ben Mendelsohn) and Anna’s (Essie Davis), worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla shows everyone in her orbit—her parents, Moses, a sensitive music teacher, a budding child violinist, and a disarmingly honest pregnant neighbour—how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life.

Bill & Ted Face The Music - 28 August

Yet to fulfill their rock and roll destiny, the now middle aged best friends set out on a new adventure when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it. Along the way, they will be helped by their daughters, a new batch of historical figures, and a few music legends — to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe.

The New Mutants - 28 August

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents The New Mutants, an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
