Yilber Diaz set for major league debut for Diamondbacks vs. Braves
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said right-hander Yilber Diaz will be the Diamondbacks’ starting pitcher in Monday night’s game, in which he will be making his major league debut.
Diaz, 23, has logged a 4.03 ERA in 76 innings, striking out 105, between Double-A and Triple-A this year.
Diaz’s most recent start, in which he struck out 13 in six no-hit innings for Triple-A Reno, pushed his candidacy over the edge, Lovullo said.
“We had some of our key people watching him, honing in on him, from the front office, and they were really impressed with what they saw,” Lovullo said.
Diaz’s strike-throwing had been viewed as concerning enough to prompt evaluators to view him as a future reliever, but team officials believe his control has improved to the point that he has earned a chance to start.
