Wyatt Teller injury update: Browns Pro Bowl RG placed on injured reserve with MCL sprain

BEREA — The Browns placed Pro Bowl right guard Wyatt Teller on the injured reserve list on Wednesday.

Teller suffered an injury to his right knee on Dustin Hopkins' 53-yard field goal try with 10:45 remaining in the third quarter of last Sunday's 21-15 loss to the New York Giants. He was lined up at right guard on the field goal team next to right tackle Dawand Jones, who rolled into Teller's knee when New York's Rakeem Nuñez-Roches and D.J. Davidson knocked him down on the snap.

The three-time Pro Bowler was determined to have a grade 2 MCL sprain on Monday. At that time, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski indicated the timetable for return was "multiple weeks," and gave a strong indication that a trip to the injured reserve list could be coming.

"Yeah, it's a huge loss for us," quarterback Deshaun Watson said. "Wyatt is a pro’s pro. He gives everything each and every day, he comes, he works each and every week. He's going to go full throttle regardless if he's banged up or not. And he just knows exactly how to play that guard position. He helps out with all the guys up front, helps out with me.

"He goes to the final whistle. He's a beast. So I think definitely we're going to miss Wyatt and make sure that he gets healthy as soon as possible and when we get him back, we're definitely going to be excited."

The earliest Teller could return to the lineup would be the Week 9 home game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 3. That game comes right before the Browns have a bye the following week.

Rookie Zak Zinter filled in for Teller against New York and allowed just one quarterback hurry in 26 pass-blocking snaps. Coach Kevin Stefanski wouldn't commit to the third-round pick out of the University of Michigan starting against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, but his teammates seem convinced it will be him.

"I'm excited about the opportunity for Zak and all the guys that's going to be up in that rotation," Watson said. "Whoever is out there, it's going to give everything they got and it's another opportunity for us to be able to go out there and perform and try to execute at the highest ability and try to get a W. So I'm excited about everything."

The Browns signed veteran tackle Germain Ifedi off the practice squad. Ifedi was elevated from the practice squad for the first two games of the season.

Cleveland also signed offensive tackle Sebastian Gutierrez, offensive tackle Ricky Lee III and defensive end Elerson Smith to the practice squad. They also released linebacker Luiji Vilain from the practice squad.

The Browns have 10 players on the injured reserve list, which doesn't include Nick Chubb, Nyheim Hines or Michael Dunn. Those players are on either the physically unable to perform or non-football illness/injury lists.

Teller, 29, only missed one game a season ago. That was when Stefanski rested most of his starters in the regular-season finale at the Cincinnati Bengals.

Teller has played in 86 career games, including his 2018 season with the Buffalo Bills. He's played in 78 games with 71 starts since the Browns acquired him in a late-August 2019 trade from the Bills.

This is Teller's first trip to the injured reserve list, but even-numbered seasons haven't been without some tough injury luck for him.

A Week 6 calf injury in 2022 cost Teller two full games before he tried to return the week after a bye for a Week 10 game at the Miami Dolphins, but only was able to play 11 offensive snaps before having to leave the game. He did play at least 95% of the offensive snaps in the final eight games of that season.

The calf also was an issue that cost him three games in the 2020 season when he strained it during a Week 5 game against the Indianapolis Colts. He lost games in Week 15 and 16 against the two New York teams due to an ankle injury.
