Browns offensive line injury update: Wyatt Teller out 'multiple weeks', IR a 'possibility'

(This story has been updated with new information.)

There's work to be done to repair the holes that have opened up on the Browns offensive line. There's not a lot of time to get them done before that line has to face someone else.

The Browns lost three different offensive linemen to injuries during Sunday's 21-15 loss to the New York Giants. Right guard Wyatt Teller left with a knee injury incurred on Dustin Hopkins' 53-yard missed field goal, and both left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. (knee) and right tackle James Hudson III (shoulder) left with around seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski only had an update for Teller when he held a Monday Zoom call with the media. Stefanski said the Pro Bowler will be out multiple weeks with the knee injury, although he later said injured reserve was a "possibility" that they "were working through" for Teller.

A league source confirmed that it's an MCL sprain for Teller. NFL Network reported it specifically to be a grade two sprain.

"Man, that's my dog," tight end Jordan Akins said Monday. "He's a freight train. He's definitely very powerful, gets a positive push off the line of scrimmage and we definitely going to miss him, but we have offensive linemen who can replace that. We just got to prep him and put him in positions to be successful."

The Browns, to finish out the game against the Giants, moved Joel Bitonio to left tackle from left guard and Ethan Pocic from center to left guard, with Nick Harris coming in at center. Rookie Zak Zinter filled in for Teller at right guard, while Dawand Jones, apparently benched to open the second half, came back in for Hudson at right tackle.

Zinter would seem to be the one to remain in Teller's spot during his time away, starting with Sunday's road game at the Las Vegas Raiders. He finished with 34 offensive snaps against the Giants, all of them at right guard.

"We'll work through the offensive line," Stefanski said. "It's definitely something that's going to be, we'll take in more information today, tomorrow, Wednesday before we know exactly how that's going to shake out."

There's another part to all of this as well. That's the Jack Conklin piece.

Conklin was listed as questionable to play Sunday, along with Wills, as they came back from last season's knee injuries. However, Conklin was downgraded to out on Saturday because of a hamstring injury.

The Browns announced Conklin out minutes after they also announced the various roster moves and gameday elevations for the Giants game. None of those moves involved another offensive linemen as they had done the previous two games by elevating Germain Ifedi.

"Yeah, I felt pretty comfortable with the guys that we had," Stefanski said. "Losing Wyatt on field goal, those are tough. Those are just some circumstances that you don't often see. Bottom line is we felt comfortable with having eight up."

The Giants, meanwhile, had eight sacks of quarterback Deshaun Watson in the game. That went along with 17 quarterback hits by a New York team that eschewed its schematic tendencies to dial up blitz after blitz.

That's elevated the total number of sacks Watson has taken to a league-high 16 through just three games. He's been hit 42 times, including 17 times each in two home games.

"I think when you’re talking about protection, it’s everybody," Stefanski said. "It’s from myself, the coaches, the offensive line, tight ends, running backs, wide receivers, quarterbacks. It’s everybody. And everybody has a job to do in order to keep the quarterback clean. So I got to do my part. It’s no secret we can’t let him get hit that many times. That’s not good enough, and that will get fixed.”

It's going to have to be fixed, and quickly. The Browns next face the Raiders, who, despite being 1-2, feature Maxx Crosby, one of the top edge rushers in the game.

Crosby has been hampered by an ankle injury the last week or so, but he picked up his third sack of the season in a loss Sunday to the Carolina Panthers.

"We got to get hands on people," Akins said. "We got to push the line of scrimmage and get positive yards, not just in the passing game, but in the running game as well. We have to establish the running game before we can go to the passing game. … That's what it's all about. It's just about stand together, especially in times like this. Don't divide the team, just come together, uplift each other and let's get back to work."
