Why trading Brandon Aiyuk could get messy for 49ers

Despite the offseason coming to an end, and the San Francisco 49ers on the cusp of their first preseason game of the 2024 campaign, there is still little clarity when it comes to Brandon Aiyuk's contract situation in Santa Clara.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, the former first-round pick out of Arizona State has been "holding in" at training camp. Aiyuk is at training camp with the 49ers, but he has yet to practice with the team in Santa Clara. Prior to the start of training camp, Aiyuk demanded a trade from the 49ers as he pursues a new contract.

However, even if the right demands are met for a trade for Aiyuk, things might not be that simple for the 49ers.

During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter was asked about Aiyuk's situation with the 49ers. While he technically does not have a no-trade clause, Schefter spoke about Aiyuk's hypothetical "unofficial no-trade clause" due to his future contract. Even if a team meets the 49ers' demands with compensation for Aiyuk in a trade, but he doesn't want to sign a long-term deal with that franchise, that team could then pull back from a potential trade.

Brandon Aiyuk has an unofficial trade tag because he has the ability to say to these teams, 'I'm not taking a deal if I don't want to go there' and he's not taking the deal, then why would the team give up assets, draft capital to go get a guy like that if he is showing or telling them that he's not willing to commit there long term.

In his fourth season with the 49ers, Aiyuk recorded a career-high 1342 yards to go along with 75 receptions and seven touchdowns during San Francisco's run to the Super Bowl.
