Why NFL draft experts weren't thrilled with Titans taking T'Vondre Sweat in second round

After strengthening the offensive line in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, Tennessee Titans GM Ran Carthon and his staff opted for defense Friday in Round 2 with the No. 38 pick, selecting Texas defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat.

The pick provides a fresh spark to a Titans defensive front that recently lost Denico Autry to the Texans.

Sweat won the Outland Trophy last season, given to the best interior lineman in college football. Sweat was also named a unanimous All-American, becoming the fifth Texas defensive tackle to do so. He played all 14 games this past season for Texas recording career highs in tackles, tackles for loss, solo tackles and sacks.

Here's what experts are saying about the pick:

The Tennessean's Nick Gray:

The grade: C

The reason: "Sweat is a limited defensive tackle who will not play often on passing downs. For a team that doesn't have another Day 2 pick, it is an odd value pick. Sweat should be a handful on double-team blocks against the run at 366 pounds, but there's not a lot of consistent pass-rush ability in his film."

USA TODAY's Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz

The grade: C-

The reason: "Ran Carthon is certainly setting a tone up front by following his JC Latham pick with Sweat. The 6-4, 366-pounder is a massive presence in the middle and can control the line of scrimmage while demanding double teams. His impact might top out there, though, as he's unlikely to make much of a dent as a pass rusher. His conditioning could prove problematic in his ability to be consistent contributor, and he was arrested earlier this month on driving while intoxicated charges. This investment seems a rich for a prospect with so many question marks."

Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame

The grade: F

The reason: "The Texas product was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. On the field, Sweat registered five sacks in five years with the Longhorns. He’s talented, but there are unanswered questions."

Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski:

The grade: F

The reason: "Sweat is a bulldozer when he's fully engaged, with the ability to get under offensive linemen's pads and walk them right back to the quarterback. He's hell to move at the point of attack, too. How Sweat holds his weight in check, the effort that he provides on a down-by-down basis and what he provides on obvious passing downs will always be major concerns, just as they are with any massive nose tackle. Sweat didn't help answer any questions about his discipline when he was arrested under suspicion of driving while intoxicated in early April."

CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso:

The grade: C-

The reason: "Monstrous NT who finally demonstrated a glimmer of pass-rush capability with hand work as a senior. Not as good against the run or double teams as his size indicates. Probably two-down player in the NFL. Tennessee did need more size inside along the DL, but this is too early for a limited player."
