Why isn't LaNorris Sellers wearing goggles? South Carolina QB substitutes contacts for game vs LSU
The eyes of the collective college football world will be on Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday afternoon for South Carolina’s game against No. 17 LSU.
But it’s the eyes of one of the game’s participants — and, specifically, what isn’t covering them — that’s likely to attract the most attention.
Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers has been one of the breakout stars of the opening weeks of the 2024 season due at least in some part to the rec specs he wears under his helmet.
In the hours leading up to the matchup against the Tigers, however, it was revealed that he’ll be adopting a slightly different look in his team’s biggest game of the young season.
Why isn’t LaNorris Sellers wearing goggles?
On “College GameDay,” which was set up in Columbia outside Williams-Brice Stadium, Sellers became one of the main discussion points regarding the South Carolina-LSU game.
“College GameDay” analyst Pat McAfee took the Sellers appreciation a step further by sporting a pair of goggles in homage to the bespectacled passer, with some of the thousands of fans gathered in the background doing the same.
That sartorial choice prompted an unexpected update from McAfee’s colleague, Rece Davis — Sellers wouldn’t be rocking his rec specs against LSU and would instead be wearing contacts.
“I love LaNorris,” McAfee said. “I love his moxie. He does whatever he needs to do. But these things can be an NIL deal worth millions. Just something to think about, Sellers.”

Davis’ report that Sellers would be wearing contacts was later confirmed.
Whether the Gamecocks can move to 3-0 and earn their biggest victory of the season will depend at least in some part on how Sellers performs with the new ocular arrangement. In his first two starts of his college career, wins against Old Dominion and Kentucky, Sellers has completed 54.1% of his passes for 280 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown.
His rec specs have become an integral part of his identity and branding. Sellers’ personal logo that graces the top of his online shop is a stylized set of circles that resemble his goggles. The online shop sells t-shirts with that logo.
