Why Cleveland Browns didn't bar Bill Callahan from Tennessee Titans: 'Unique situation'
The Cleveland Browns didn't block offensive line coach Bill Callahan from taking the same position with the Tennessee Titans on the staff of his son, head coach Brian Callahan. But they could have.
Bill Callahan reportedly signed a contract extension following the 2022 season and would have been under contract with the Browns for at least the 2024 season. Per NFL rules, that would have allowed them to block any interview by a team interested in him for a non-coordinator role.
That included Tennessee, which hired Brian Callahan last month. But the Browns opted to give permission for Bill Callahan to talk with his son's team.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, speaking during a press conference Monday in Cleveland, said the organization understood the opportunity the Callahans had of working together and was not going to bar Bill from joining the Titans' staff.

"Bill Callahan — a very unique situation there to go work for Brian, not with Brian," Stefanski said. He's going to work for Brian. I can't wait for Brian to boss him around. The dream of every kid is to boss their parents around. Happy for those guys.
"Organizationally, we realize that's a unique situation and did not want to stand in the way of that. Excited, certainly, for Brian and Bill down there."
Bill Callahan had been the Browns' offensive line coach since 2020 and is one of the most respected position coaches in football. He will be tasked with fixing the Titans' offensive line, which has struggled for the past two seasons.
