Updating Oregon's rankings in college football polls entering Boise State game

Oregon's unspectacular opening game win against what should've been an overmatched opponent came with consequences.

The Ducks, who were ranked third in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, dropped three sports to No. 6 when the first poll of the regular season was announced Tuesday morning.

It wasn't the biggest fall by a previously ranked team — No. 19 LSU fell nine spots and No. 22 Clemson fell eight — though it was the biggest drop by a team that is 1-0, which Oregon is after beating Idaho 24-14 Saturday in Autzen Stadium.

But the Ducks went into the game nearly a 50-point favorite by kickoff and and only led by three points until a touchdown with 5:36 to play gave them a double-digit lead over their Football Championship Subdivision opponent.

Ranked ahead of Oregon is No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Alabama and No. 5 Ole Miss.

Rounding out the top 10 is No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 8 Penn State, No. 9 Michigan and No. 10 Missouri.

The Buckeyes, Ducks, Nittany Lions and Wolverines give the Big Ten four teams in the top 10. Other ranked teams from the conference are No. 14 USC, No. 21 Iowa and No. 25 Washington.

In the Associated Press poll, the Ducks fell four spots to No. 7 after Week 1.

They’re behind Georgia, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame and Ole Miss, respectively, with No. 8 Penn State, No. 9 Missouri and No. 10 Michigan rounding out the top 10.

Other Big Ten teams in the AP poll are No. 13 USC and No. 21 Iowa.

Next up for Oregon is a 7 p.m. game on Saturday at Autzen Stadium against Boise State, which received votes in both the coaches poll and AP poll.
