What Oregon football’s Dan Lanning said about Ducks' Week 2 game vs. Boise State

The Oregon football team has a win under its belt, albeit an ugly one, and is now focused on its next opponent at Autzen Stadium this Saturday: the Boise State Broncos.

The game is set to kickoff in Eugene at 7 p.m.

Here are some highlights from coach Dan Lanning during his weekly press conference Monday night.

Dan Lanning says Oregon's offensive line didn't play to standard against Idaho: 'We didn't play well enough'

The Ducks uncharacteristically struggled to run the ball and gave up numerous pressures against an undersized FCS line in the Vandals on Saturday.

New quarterback Dillon Gabriel was sacked three times in a single game a year after Bo Nix was sacked five times all season.

That won’t fly for the Ducks looking ahead to this weekend.

“We didn’t play well enough,” Lanning said. “There were some miscommunications we had to clean up. But certainly, room for improvement. They know they didn’t play to the standard we want, and we can be better there.”

A fall camp injury to presumed right guard starter and Indiana transfer Matthew Bedford forced Oregon to change up its offensive line during game week and start walk-on Charlie Pickard at center and move presumed starting center and sophomore Iapani Laloulu to right guard. The other three positions were unchanged, with Josh Conerly Jr. starting at left tackle, Marcus Harper II at left guard, and Ajani Cornelius at right tackle.

Lanning said that the blame can’t solely be cast on Pickard, who he thinks played well given the circumstances on Saturday.

“His communication was pretty good,” Lanning said of Pickard. “We’ll see what it looks like moving forward but I think Charlie handled things really well. Charlie certainly wasn’t the guy that didn’t play well on the offensive line. That’s a unit that has to play well together. It takes all five guys to be on the same page and executing at a high clip. He’s part of that unit. He has ownership of that. But at the same time there were multiple guys that didn’t play to our standard on Saturday.”

Dan Lanning says Dillon Gabriel made right reads against Idaho

When asked about Oregon’s lack of explosive plays, and Gabriel’s debut featuring mostly checkdowns and short passes, Lanning said that the sixth-year Oklahoma transfer made the right reads more often than not.

Gabriel finished 41-for-49 with 380 yards and two touchdowns. His 41 completions tied a nearly 30-year-old Oregon record.

“We took a shot early in the game down the field and they stopped playing that coverage,” Lanning said. “They gave us the opportunity to take that shot. We called a lot of shot plays and they played over the top. Dillon made the smart decision with where he put the ball, where he got the ball … More of your explosives are going to come when you catch the ball in space, who is going to break a tackle and who is going to cover up and block down the field. Those are the things we have to do a better job taking care of and being able to run the ball more effectively.”

Dan Lanning impressed by Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty

Lanning didn’t mince words when asked about Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty’s 267-yard, six-touchdown performance against Georgia Southern last week.

“I think he’s the best running back I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” Lanning said. “He’s certainly an NFL guy and he doesn’t go down on first contact ever. He’s one of the best stiff-arm guys we’ve gone against. He runs really, physical, and the next guy they brought in ran for 100 yards too. It’s a really powerful rushing attack, their offense does a lot of really good things to scheme you up.”

Jeanty averaged 13.4 yards per carry and scored nearly at will against Georgia Southern last week, and backup Sire Gaines had 12 more carries for 116 yards and a touchdown, as well as three catches for 44 yards and a score out of the backfield.

The Broncos defeated Georgia Southern 56-45 in a barnburner in Week 1.

Injury update on OL Matthew Bedford and WR Gary Bryant Jr.

Lanning kept his comments short when asked about injuries. Bedford was listed as questionable on Oregon’s availability report released Saturday, but dressed and went through early warmups during the game. Receiver Gary Bryant Jr. also dressed and went through warmups, but neither played.

Lanning said he is optimistic about both being available to play this week against the Broncos.
