Where does Oklahoma State basketball coaching job rank in the Big 12? Here's our score

Mike Boynton is out as OSU’s men’s basketball coach, and now we await his successor.

We put out a shortlist of candidates, but just how good of a job is OSU basketball? Where does it rank in the new-look Big 12?

I came up with six factors, ranking each of the 16 Big 12 schools in every factor from best (16 points) to worst (1 point).

I then averaged each school’s combined score to get my ranking of best Big 12 men’s basketball jobs. Is the methodology full proof? Of course not. But I tried to use data as much as I could to formulate the rankings.

One factor you won’t see, and it’s a big one, is NIL spending. There is no way to track it.

Here’s how the rankings came out, followed by how each program ranked in specific categories.

Best Big 12 men’s basketball jobs (average score)

1. Kansas: 15.8

Almost a clean sweep for the Jayhawks, which ranked first in all but one category. You could argue it’s the best job in the country.

2. Arizona: 13.5

Arizona will enter the Big 12 as the clear cut No. 2 men’s basketball program. The Wildcats are closer to No. 1 than they are to No. 3.

3. Iowa State: 11.3

Hilton Magic is real. Iowa State ranks below average in the Big 12 based on historical and recent success, but support for the program is strong.

4. Cincinnati: 10.2

Another elite basketball school that recently joined the Big 12 ranks. Cincinnati has won two national championships with six Final Four appearances. Former Bearcat Oscar Robertson is among the best college basketball players of all time.

5. BYU: 9.8

If there’s a glaring flaw in the rankings, it’s that the new schools skew higher likely based on playing lesser competition. BYU’s ranking is strengthened by its attendance numbers, though. The Cougars regularly fill the massive 19,000-seat Marriott Center.

6. Houston: 9.7

Houston went to one NCAA Tournament from 1992 to 2017. But the Cougars were near the top of the sport in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and Kelvin Sampson has brought them back there.

7. Texas Tech: 9.3

Texas Tech has turned into a basketball school. The Red Raiders have been a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament in three of the last six seasons. United Supermarkets Arena is a fabulous gym … unless you’re a visitor.

8. Kansas State: 9.2

Have multiple coaches won there? That’s one of my categories, and K-State is tied for the highest score. Six coaches have led the Wildcats to multiple NCAA tournament appearances: Jack Hartman, Tex Winter, Bruce Weber, Frank Martin, Lon Kruger and Jack Gardner.

9. Utah: 9.0

The Utes rank higher than I thought they would. The 1990s with Rick Majerus were the golden years for Utah basketball.

T-10. Baylor: 7.8

Baylor would likely rank last if not for Scott Drew, who turned a bad job into a good-ish one? It’s hard to say, but the Bears have a new arena and national championship banner hanging in it thanks to Drew. Regardless, Drew has made the job much more attractive for the next guy.

T-10. West Virginia: 7.8

Seems about right for the Mountaineers. West Virginia had middling ranks in most categories. Multiple coaches have won there and the fans back the program. Those are two huge pluses.

12. Oklahoma State: 7.7

This is interesting. West Virginia and Oklahoma State are both looking for a new head coach, and they rank back-to-back here. They’re likely looking at similar candidate pools. A lack of recent success plummeted OSU’s score. The Cowboys have the worst winning percentage of any Big 12 school in the last 10 years. It’s still a proud program, though.

13. Colorado: 6.8

Colorado doesn’t have much of a basketball tradition. The Buffs are 11-17 all time in the NCAA Tournament. Current coach Tad Boyle is the winningest coach in Colorado hoops history.

14. Arizona State: 6.0

The fighting Lu Dorts (and James Hardenes) don’t bring much history to Big 12 basketball. The Sun Devils made back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 2017-18 and 2018-19 for the first time since 1979-81.

15. TCU: 4.5

It’s a rough score for the Frogs. TCU was awful in its first four Big 12 seasons, never winning more than four conference games, but Jamie Dixon has done a tremendous job in Fort Worth. The Frogs are likely headed for their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament — what would be the longest streak in program history.

16. UCF: 1.5

The Knights ranked last in all but one category. On the bright side, I’ve really enjoyed watching UCF this year. Johnny Dawkins did an excellent job, and the student section at UCF always looked great on TV. UCF is so new to high-major college sports that I wouldn’t balk at this job.

Diving into the Big 12 basketball job rankings

Historical success (weighing NCAA tournament appearances, Final Fours and national championships)

No surprise at the top, but it’s interesting that four of the top-six schools are Big 12 newcomers. Three of the bottom-four are also newcomers.

Remember, the rankings are from best to worst, with each school getting a point value from 16 (best) to one (worst) for its standing.

Recent success (winning percentage over last 10 seasons)

Houston, Cincinnati and BYU get a bit of an unfair boost here given that they were playing weaker schedules. Especially BYU in the West Coast Conference.

Is this the best way to gauge a fan base? Probably not. Support ebbs and flows by season. This is only a snapshot in time. But I wanted some data to work with rather than making an arbitrary list.
