Where will Clemson RB Will Shipley go in NFL draft? Top 5 landing spots
CLEMSON — Running back Will Shipley enters the NFL Draft as Clemson football's top offensive prospect after spending three seasons with the Tigers.
The 5-foot-11 back is top 10 in school history in touchdowns (33), 100-yard rushing games (10) and all-purpose yards (4,253). He is the first player in ACC history to be selected as a first-team all-ACC honoree at running back, all-purpose and specialist.
After not taking part in drills at the NFL Scouting Combine, Shipley ran 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash at Clemson’s Pro Day, which would have ranked him third among backs at the combine. His agility allows him to make defenders miss in space, and his versatility in the passing game adds another component to his game.
Here are the top five destinations for the Tigers' standout running back:
Will Shipley NFL draft projection 1: Houston Texans
Last season, the Texans' running game was disappointing, averaging 3.7 yards per carry, which tied for third worst in the NFL. Dameon Pierce had a sophomore slump, and the team traded for veteran Joe Mixon after Devin Singletary departed in free agency. Mixon, who didn't miss a game last season for the first time since 2021, can excel at running and receiving as he enters his eighth season, but Houston needs depth.
Houston adding Shipley in Round 3-5 will be a boost for the reigning NFL offensive rookie of the year, quarterback C.J. Stroud, as he enters his second season.
Will Shipley NFL draft projection 2: Kansas City Chiefs
The back-to-back Super Bowl Champions have a star running back in Isiah Pacheco and re-signed 2020 first-round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire, but they let pass-catching Jerick McKinnon walk as a free agent. This opens the door for the Chiefs to bring in an inexpense, young and versatile back.
Like when Kansas City selected Pacheco in the seventh round in 2022, it can draft Shipley on Day 2 or 3 to help quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense.
Will Shipley NFL draft projection 3: Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders let Josh Jacobs walk in free agency and signed Alexander Mattison to share carries with third-year player Zamir White. Both backs are known for their tough running styles, meaning the Raiders need to add a pass catcher out the backfield to support Aidan O'Connell, Gardner Minshew or if they draft a quarterback.
Las Vegas' need fits Shipley's profile, and he can add depth and a third-down receiving back to its roster.

Will Shipley NFL draft projection 4: Cleveland Browns
The Browns need younger offensive skill position players as their roster ages. At running back, Nick Chubb, 28, is coming off knee surgeries that jeopardize his status for Week 1 and is in the final year of his contract.
Although Cleveland is known for its ground-and-pound running style and Shipley isn't a workhorse, the Browns selecting him on Day 2 or 3 is a possibility. The Browns have used their backs in various screen plays, and they need speed and energy on offense.
Will Shipley NFL draft projection 5: Carolina Panthers
The Panthers have many holes to address on their roster, and drafting a running back isn't high on that list. Still, Miles Sanders, who signed a four-year deal with them last offseason, recorded career lows in carries, yards and yards per carry, and Chuba Hubbard, who had a career high in rushing yards last season, is in the final season of his deal.
Carolina bringing in Shipley will help quarterback Bryce Young in his second season. Shipley is a native of the Charlotte area and attended a local pro day April 9 at the Panthers' stadium. If Carolina selects Shipley or any other Clemson player in the draft, it will be its first time selecting a Tiger in franchise history.
