Westerville Central football coach Ed Miley steps down after two seasons
The search is underway for a new football coach at Westerville Central following the resignation of Ed Miley after two seasons.
The Warhawks went 7-16 overall and 5-5 in OCC-Ohio play under Miley. They were 1-2 in the postseason, including losing to league rival Pickerington North 28-0 in the first round of the Division I, Region 3 playoffs this season.
“The kids battled through a really tough schedule this year and practiced hard and played hard,” Miley said. “I hope they do well moving forward. It’s a good job. They'll be good candidates. ... The record doesn’t show it, but our kids did a great job closing the gap on the best teams in the state.”
The Warhawks went 2-9 this season, but they had a couple close losses to strong teams. They lost their regular-season matchup with North 16-14 and fell 31-29 to Dublin Coffman. North won two playoff games this fall, and Coffman won three.
“I’m disappointed (Miley resigned), but I’m not surprised because he’s not a teacher here in our building,” athletic director Andy Ey said. “The way he described it to me, you can’t do it right if you’re not a teacher in our building.”
Miley is an engineering instructor at Olentangy Academy.
“It would have been nice to get into the building at Central,” Miley said. “But just the way education works nowadays ... they just don’t make that happen, so we gave the best run we could for two years.”
The position has been posted, and Ey hopes to hire a coach who will bring stability to the program.
“You want to get somebody who’s going to be a teacher in the building and establish some roots and establish that consistent presence in our building,” he said.
