Vic Fangio and Miami Dolphins are parting ways after one season

MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio are parting ways, the club announced Wednesday.

Fangio spent one season with Miami.

The Dolphins finished 10th in total defense, which is average yards per game, and were 22nd in scoring defense.

"I want to thank Vic for his contributions in 2023," coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement. "When we assessed the season, it became apparent that this was the best path forward for all parties involved.

"Now we turn our focus to 2024 and beyond with urgency as we identify the best candidate to lead our defense moving forward. We remain steadfastly committed to the development of our players and to building a winning team with sustained success."

The personality meshing of McDaniel, 40, and Fangio, 65, was not always seamless, league sources indicated throughout the season.

McDaniel is a new-age coach with some quirks.

And Fangio, well, he's a bit old school.

It never seemed to be a long-term marriage.

But Miami felt Fangio's experience and his renowned scheme were upgrades over the departed Josh Boyer, a holdover from the Brian Flores staff.

The Dolphins were sixth in rushing yards per play allowed and 18th in passing yards per play allowed in 2023.

Miami allowed too many passing touchdowns.

But with a myriad of injuries, including to key players Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, Jerome Baker, Jalen Ramsey, Andrew Van Ginkel and Jevon Holland, Miami's defense at worst met overall expectations.

It is possible Fangio will land with the Philadelphia Eagles, who have an open defensive coordinator position. Fangio is a Pennsylvania native.

Sean Desai, Anthony Campanile are possible replacements as Dolphins defensive coordinator

It will be interesting to see where McDaniel turns.

Former Eagles defensive coordinator Sean Desai is available and is Fangio's protege. Does McDaniel want to operate the same scheme?

Or could Miami stay in-house and promote linebackers coach Anthony Campanile, who has drawn the interest of other NFL teams as coordinator?
