'I’ve been saying watch out for us.' Plainfield a win away from first sectional title since 2016

AVON – It was a foreboding sign for Brownsburg when Plainfield scored on three straight 3-pointers — coming from three different players — to open Friday’s girls basketball Class 4A Sectional 12 semifinal.

The Quakers jumped to an early lead and never looked back in a 73-62 win.

Plainfield (16-7) moves on to face Terre Haute North (8-17) in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game. The Patriots topped Terre Haute South 45-34 in Friday’s early semifinal. Plainfield won the regular season matchup between the teams 51-27 and has won five straight over the Patriots.

Sophomore Berkeley Williams — who started the Plainfield scoring with a baseline 3 — led all scorers with a career-high 29 points after scoring a career-best 27 in the Quakers’ regular-season finale. Williams relentlessly attacked the Bulldogs’ defense, accounting for 19 first-half points to lift Plainfield to a 42-32 lead.

“She’s the exact type of kid you want to coach,” said Plainfield coach Curt Benge. “She has a tremendous attitude. She’s probably one of our two best defenders, and when she gets going, she can take the ball to the basket and compliment it with the jump shot. When you have other scorers around her, that makes it difficult (on the other team).”

Having multiple scoring threats spacing the court has been a key to Plainfield’s resurgence this season. Freshman Hannah Menser scored 17 against the Bulldogs, slightly exceeding her team-high 15.1 points per game. Williams entered the game averaging 14.3 points and senior Payton Benge (8 points) averages 13.0.

“I think the fact that we’re so unselfish with the ball surprises teams,” said freshman Kara Olejnik, who scored six points off the bench, including three fourth-quarter free throws to help seal the win. “There are a lot of times when they try to focus on one person, but with us, you can’t focus on one person.”

Junior Purdue recruit Avery Gordon scored 26 to lead Brownsburg (13-12). Junior Morgan Montgomery added 12 points and senior Emma Hendricks scored 11.

In the game’s closing minutes, Curt Benge wasn’t hesitant to play his younger players, with the freshmen Menser and Olejnik on the court along with two sophomores and a junior.

“They’ve played a ton of basketball,” Benge said. “They’ve been playing together since they were young, and they’ve had success coming up the line. They don’t lack for confidence when it comes to basketball. The joyous part is they are humble and were able to blend with a team that took its lumps last year and got better.”

Now, the Quakers are one game away from their first sectional title since 2016.

“Last year, we had an 8-16 record and we’ve completely flipped that this year,” Williams said. “A sectional win is extremely important. We’ve been talking about climbing the ladder this year, and I think this is our next step. Honestly, I’ve been saying watch out for us since the beginning. We’ve had our ebbs and flows, but this is when we need to be playing our best basketball and I think we came out and did that.”
