Unique chemistry lifts Twin Lakes record-setting duo, which includes state's 3-point queen

MONTICELLO — Addie Bowsman knew what was coming the moment she passed the ball to a wide-open Olivia Nickerson along the perimeter. The Twin Lakes junior raised three fingers as her senior teammate released the shot, then triumphantly threw both arms in the air and spun around in celebration as the ball swished through the net. That third-quarter triple, the 364th of Nickerson's career, broke the state record for career 3-pointers set by Oregon Davis' Aubrey (Minix) Lady from 2006-09, and served as the primary headline from the Indians' 77-50 win over Faith Christian at the Twin Lakes Holiday Tournament.

"I knew it was going in as soon as I passed it to her," Bowsman said, a point echoed by her dad, Twin Lakes coach Brad Bowsman, who had the perfect vantage point from the sideline. Added Brad: "You could see (when she shot it), 'OK, she's got it. We're done. We don't have to worry about that anymore.'"

Though brief, the celebration was on in Monticello, with everyone in red-and-white erupting when the shot fell through — except for Nickerson. "She didn't even cheer or anything when she broke the record," Addie laughed as Nickerson grinned next to her.

"It was like, 'Oh yeah, I just hit another 3.' I feel like I cheered more than she did."

Nickerson's response was relatively muted, but that was probably to be expected from the even-keel senior. Nothing ever gets to her, Bowsman observed — and she would know better than most. She and Nickerson have played together for as long as either can remember and their dads, Brad Bowsman and Troy Nickerson, have been coaching together at Twin Lakes since before their daughters were born. They grew up in the gym together, Addie said.

"Her dad, my dad — we're all four together," she continued. "Olivia and I, we work together and then as we work together, everyone on the team starts working in motion."

Their shared history added another layer to last week's tournament semifinal vs. Bishop Chatard. Played less than 24 hours after the Faith Christian game, Nickerson scored 20 points to become the program's all-time leading scorer, while Bowsman matched the school's single-game record with a 46-point performance that was highlighted by a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation.

A memorable moment for the junior-senior tandem (and their fathers) entering the final month of the regular season.

"It's been amazing (and) having that relationship outside of the sport has helped a lot," Olivia said of playing alongside Addie. "Obviously she has another year without me, so being able to be her biggest supporter on the court right now is really special. If she's down, I can pick her up right away, because I know what she wants to hear and what she needs to hear."

'Yin and yang.' Twin Lakes basketball a family affair for Nickersons, Bowsmans

In Nickerson and Bowsman, Twin Lakes has a pair of high-volume shooters, both capable of scoring at a ridiculous clip and filling out a box score in a hurry. On paper, such a duo could result in a power struggle and create rifts within the locker room. But there's a balance between the two, the result of their long-standing friendship away from the floor.

They just help each other, Brad observed.

"If Addie cuts or flares, I know where she's going to go, because we've played together for so long," Nickerson said. "Then on defense, I don't even have to tell her to rotate. I stick my hand out and she's already going that way."

Nickerson is typically the initial focal point of opposing defenses. And for good reason. The 5-7 Bethel commit averages 21 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, and is a career 42% shooter with over 1,800 points. They run plays to help get her open, Brad said, but the attention she draws also takes a defender away from helping on Addie, clearing space for her to get to the basket.

As for the 5-7 Bowsman — who's scored nearly 1,300 career points and holds a number of college offers — she averages 24 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals, and her ability to create for both herself and others makes her the perfect pairing for Nickerson.

"She can shoot 3s, but if they're up on her, she can drive and throw in that floater, which I can never do," Nickerson said, drawing a laugh from Bowsman. "Somehow she's always hitting that shot. It's pretty cool."

"It's really fun to coach those two girls," Brad added.

The Indians have a terrifying two-some in Nickerson and Bowsman, but escaping their sectional — which includes 3A No. 2 Rensselaer Central, No. 6 Western, No. 8 Benton Central and No. 11 West Lafayette — for a second consecutive season will require widespread contributions. That's been a focal point since the conclusion of last year's run to the semistate finals (first regional title since 1982; graduated six seniors).

They've emphasized the importance of staying engaged and putting themselves in scoring positions, Brad said. And though there have been some growing pains and times when players were caught watching Olivia and Addie, they've taken significant strides since the beginning of the year.

Players like Jasmine West are beginning to look for their shot more, Addie observed (she hit six 3s in a win over West Lafayette), as are sophomore Taylor Oliver and junior Chloe Lucas, while junior Cydney Wert, is growing defensively in the post.

Though it ended in an 81-78 overtime loss, the Indians took a significant step against a very physical Chatard team, Addie continued. "I'm just so proud of them."

"If we would have played (Chatard) at the beginning of the season, we wouldn't have even been close," Nickerson added. "Having that leap right there was really special."
