IHSAA girls basketball: 20 players who stood out in holiday tournaments
The week between Christmas and New Year's is perhaps the best week of the high school girls basketball regular season with basically all of the state's top teams and players on display across a variety of tournaments and invitationals. I took in games at Noblesville, Monticello and New Castle. Here are some individuals who stood out.
The Scorers Table: Holiday hoops roundup extravaganza (Ep. 5, Part 1)
Molly Baker, Columbia City
The senior forward was sidelined by foul trouble vs. Indian Creek in the first game of the Hall of Fame Classic, but she was able to stay on the floor and was terrific inside against Jennings County. Baker finished the final with nine points, four rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block.
HOF Classic: Baxter clears milestone in title-clinching win
Lillian Barnes, Valparaiso
Barnes (back) is nearing full health and settling into her new role as the team's starting point guard. Barnes put together a tidy 11-point effort vs. Noblesville in the first round of the Millers' holiday tournament, going 5-for-10 from the field with five rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block.
Addison Baxter, Columbia City
Friday was a milestone day for the Butler commit, who cleared 1,000 points for her career, totaling 37 points in wins over Indian Creek and Jennings County. She showed off her creativity and finishing capabilities as a scorer, and her prowess as a facilitator.
'It's a blessing to be here': What we learned from the girls Hall of Fame Classic
Olivia Berzai, Bishop Chatard
The sophomore had a great couple days in Monticello, totaling 56 points across three games, including a 23-point effort vs. Twin Lakes in the semifinals. She also had 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks against the Indians.
Addison Bowsman, Twin Lakes
I'll let the numbers do the work here.
First round vs. Faith Christian: 22 points, seven rebounds, 13 assists … Semifinals vs. Chatard: 46 points (ties school record), five rebounds, five assists, three steals — plus the game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation … 3rd place vs. Tri-County: 31 points, six rebounds, three assists, six steals. The junior is something special.
Alivia Elmore, Jennings County
Had the Panthers successfully rallied to beat Columbia City in the Hall of Fame Classic championship game, the senior point guard would've been among the night's three stars. She had two steals and 12 points, with eight of those points coming across a critical stretch midway through the fourth quarter that kept JC within reach of the Eagles (a bucket and back-to-back 3s).
Kennedy Fuelling, Norwell
Fuelling was a noticeable presence against Fort Wayne Snider, finding open looks and knocking them down to keep the Knights within striking distance of the Panthers through the first three quarters. She notched 22 points against Snider, then poured in 32 points in a 62-55 win over Valpo. Norwell erased a six-point deficit with a 14-2 run over the final 4:19.
What We Learned at Noblesville: Jordyn Poole's return, Reagan Wilson's leadership, Norwell and 'the big dogs'
Becca Gerdt, Valparaiso
The senior has recovered after missing most of last season due to a knee injury, and she was a steady presence for Valpo in a closer-than-it-looked loss to Noblesville, pouring in 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting, with 15 rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Lillie Graves, McCutcheon
The freshman star fought through illness and held her own against a very physical Chatard defense. Graves logged a team-high 18 points to lift the Mavericks to a 50-35 win over Chatard, their 10th straight victory.
Alyx Kendall, Bishop Chatard
Only a sophomore, Kendall picked up 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting in a semifinals win over Twin Lakes, then tallied six points and a few big defensive plays against McCutcheon in the final.
Olivia Nickerson, Twin Lakes
Nickerson broke the state's all-time record for 3-pointers made on day one of her school's holiday tournament, then dropped 20 points less than 24 hours later to become Twin Lakes' all-time leading scorer. She closed out the event with 19 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block vs. Tri-County.
What We Learned in Monticello: Chatard's physicality, Faith Christian's schedule, Ziolkowski's development
Tia Phinezy, FW Snider
The 6-2 Phinezy was a monster inside against Norwell, swatting six shots and hauling in 12 rebounds. She rounded out her line with eight points, an assist and two steals over 19 minutes, then clocked two blocks and eight points in the loss to Noblesville.
Jordyn Poole, Fort Wayne Snider
Poole was really good against Norwell. 22 points (10-for-21 from the field), 12 assists and two steals. She's a magician with the basketball, and can score it just as well as she can pass it. The Purdue commit shook off a slow start to finish with 14 points and five assists in a 57-51 loss to Noblesville.
Kyndra Sheets, Columbia City
The senior Huntington commit poured in 13 points in the Hall of Fame Classic opener vs. Indian Creek, then scored 12 points (plus three assists and two steals) against Jennings County. Sheets, who helped keep the Eagles steady amidst a mess of foul trouble vs. IC, is nearing 1,000 points for her career.
Meredith Tippner, Noblesville
The junior strung together three efficient shooting performances to close out 2023. She shot 50% in both games of the Millers' holiday event, with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting against Valpo. She rounded out her line with 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Tessa Tonkel, Columbia City
Tonkel was among the players who stepped up when Baxter ran into foul trouble vs. Indian Creek (11 points, four assists and four steals), then scattered six points across critical moments vs. Jennings County: A go-ahead layup in the final seconds of the first half, a 3-pointer to push the margin to seven midway through the fourth and a free throw down the stretch.
Reagan Wilson, Noblesville
The Iowa State commit dazzled against Valpo, picking up 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting with two assists and five steals, then she dominated against Fort Wayne Snider, scoring 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting with four triples in a much-needed 57-51 win for Noblesville.
Faith Wiseman, Indian Creek
Wiseman established herself as a massive presence in both HOF Classic games, clocking back-to-back double-doubles as she worked to take over inside for the Braves. The IU commit recorded 28 points (9-for-12 FG, 10-for-13 FTs), 13 rebounds, two assists and a steal against Columbia City, then went for 19 points, 19 rebounds, four assists and four blocks vs. Jennings County.
Juliann Woodard, Jennings County
The Michigan State commit played a starring role in the Panthers' 38-point win over Lake Central, accounting for 21 points, 22 rebounds, six assists, five blocks and a couple steals. She did most of her damage vs. Columbia City in the first half, logging 13 of her 18 points and half of her 12 rebounds over the first two quarters.
Sara Zarse, Tri-County
The junior picked up 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting with three triples against Twin Lakes in the 3rd place game in Monticello. She also had six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Of note: Zarse went for 20 and eight rebounds in a 45-43 win over Class 4A Mt. Vernon in the opening round.
