UNC football helmet stickers after win over Minnesota
UNC football squeaked by a two-point win, 19-17, in Minneapolis last night beating Big Ten opponent Minnesota in the opening game of the season. On top of beating a power-five conference team, UNC also won its first true road opener in over three decades.
The gameplan might not have gone exactly to plan but coming away with a win will never be frowned upon. Max Johnson got going in the second half just to go down with a knee injury late in the third quarter warranting a trip to the hospital.
Conner Harrell took over and the team eventually won on a Noah Burnette field goal after producing 252 yards of total offense and holding Minnesota to 244 yards total. Here is a look at five players from yesterday's game who had exemplary performances and will receive Week 1's helmet stickers.
Jakeen Harris, DB
Jakeen Harris transferred into North Carolina from North Carolina state and immediately found a role in the starting roster. Not only that, Harris was able to lead the defense in total tackles for the game.
Some HUGE performances from UNC’s new-look defense.
DB Jakeen Harris: 10 tackles
DL Jahvaree Ritzie: 3 sacks, 3 TFL (!)
The Butcher: 1 sack, 2 TFL
LB Amare Campbell: 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 FF
Harris’ 10 tackles were third-most of his career, five years (45 games) at NC State.— Grant Hughes (@GrantHughesNC) August 30, 2024
That comes as a shock considering it was the third-most in a single game of his career. On top of that, UNC was having a hard time tackling anyone last night, so he was the stability in that field.
Jahvaree Ritzie, DL
No one got to the quarterback last night like Jahvaree Ritzie. He did it early, and he did it often. He was disrupting everything PJ Fleck and Max Brosmer were trying to accomplish. He finished with five tackles and three for a loss including three sacks on the night.

• 3 Tackles for Loss

For UNC to succeed, the defense line is going to have to do exactly what Ritzie did last night and throw the entire momentum of the offense off track.
Noah Burnette, K
There were only three touchdowns scored last night, one by Max Johnson and two by Minnesota. The game came down to which kicker ended up being better, and you can't get better than perfect, which is what Noah Burnette was.
Noah Burnette has to be the game MVP.

He went 4-for-4 on the night hitting from inside the 30, two in the 40s, and one of 50+ yardage. He also hit the game-winning field goal to put the Tar Heels up 19-17 before Minnesota's kicker missed his second field goal of the night.
Omarion Hampton, RB
We all knew that Omarion Hampton would be crucial in this game, and he came through in a big way. With only 252 yards of total offense for the Heel, Hampton had 129 yards on the ground and another 17 in the air with five receptions. He accounted for 146 of the team's 252 total yards.
The 2025 RB Class is DEEP!#TarHeels Omarion Hampton took to the sky last night 🛫

It was proven last night that this offense is only going to go as far as Hampton can take it. The quarterback play didn't look great from Johnson or from Harrell. Hampton's ability to break tackles and get extra yards will be crucial this season.
Amare Campbell, LB
Amare Campbell gets a helmet sticker today because he was the most influential piece that allowed Burnette to get a field goal off after the Heels were down 17-16. Campbell hit Brosmer forcing the ball out eventually to be recovered by UNC.

Despite not scoring a touchdown after a recovery in the endzone, it still led to the game-winning field goal and a 1-0 star for North Carolina
