Texas vs Georgia: Longhorns prep for top-5 showdown knowing this is no ordinary game

Last week, Texas football defensive back Jahdae Barron shared that he had recently learned a new word from his head coach.

"He's a very smart guy. I'll be using some of his words. 'Enamored.' I've never really heard the word," the senior told reporters.

Throughout this season, "enamored" has been a go-to word in Steve Sarkisian's vocabulary. And on Monday, he used it again. "We need to continue to stay enamored with us," Sarkisian said during the opening statement of his weekly availability with reporters.

Not that there aren't other things to be enamored with in Austin on Saturday. College GameDay will be on the Texas campus. There's Formula One qualifying and an Eminem concert at Circuit of the Americas.

It wouldn't take a marketing degree to sell the Georgia-Texas football game as the area's marquee event, though.

Texas has seven home games on its schedule. And since UT’s home slate was announced, Georgia has been the featured attraction. Currently on StubHub, available tickets can be purchased for between $373 and $4,579.

Texas is No. 1 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 rankings, and Georgia has earned a top-five designation in both. Georgia and Texas were picked to finish first and second in the SEC preseason poll.

But widen the scope a little more.

In its history, Texas has played 706 home games. Will the 707th be UT’s biggest?

The Georgia-Texas game will be just the third top-five matchup to take place in Austin. The Longhorns split the previous top-ranked matchups:

∙ Texas 42, Arkansas 7 on Dec. 5, 1970: En route to winning its second straight national title, Texas closed out the regular season with a rout of the Razorbacks, who were were ranked fourth by the media and fifth by the coaches at the time. Texas topped both of those polls.

∙ Ohio State 24, Texas 7 on Sept. 9, 2006: Respectively ranked first and second in both the AP and coaches polls, Ohio State and Texas battled during the second week of the 2006 season. With the victory, Ohio State snapped the defending national champion Longhorns' 21-game winning streak.

So this is a big game, then?

"In my position, how I came to the University of Texas walking on, you passed up on scholarship offers to come play in these games," safety Michael Taaffe said.

"We're human beings," said quarterback Quinn Ewers. "We understand that there's two really good teams coming together, and I know our team is excited for the opportunity."

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian watches from the sideline during last Saturday's 34-3 win over Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl. The undefeated Longhorns are No. 1 in both major polls entering this week's showdown with Georgia.

Looking for a Hollywood ending

Sarkisian insisted that his message to the players won't change this week. Now 31-14 in his four years at Texas, he believes consistency is key. That means the Longhorns' approach remains the same.

So Sarkisian was still preaching on Monday that every week — whether UT is facing Mississippi State, Oklahoma or Georgia — is considered a conference championship game. Thanks to the SEC's tiebreaker rules, there isn't much margin for error in the ultra-competitive conference.

"(We just need to) make the movie when it comes to us, he's already dialed up the script," tight end Gunnar Helm said.

A matchup to remember

With all that being said, there is an additional appeal to this game. Texas has beaten ranked Michigan and Oklahoma teams, but this is Georgia. The Bulldogs won the 2021 and 2022 national championships before their hopes for a three-peat were ended by a loss in last year's SEC title game.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers celebrates a touchdown run against Oklahoma. The Longhorns' third-year starter was making his first start after missing the previous two games. Texas opened the week as a 3.5-point favorite over No. 4 Georgia.

Georgia is 5-1 with that lone blemish being last month's 41-34 loss at Alabama. Led by veteran quarterback Carson Beck, the Bulldogs boast a top-35 scoring offense. Allowing 17.2 points per game, Georgia ranks 20th nationally in scoring defense.

This will be the sixth all-time meeting between the schools. Texas is 4-1 against Georgia with its most-recent win coming in the 2019 Sugar Bowl. The series also features Darrell Royal's debut at UT's head coach in 1957 and Georgia's only trip to Austin in 1958.

"You love those games that if you want to call them the measuring stick or kind of a barometer for where you're at what juncture of the season against a really good team and a team that has been in national championship games, conference championship games, has won games at a really high level, and a head coach who's done it at the highest level," Sarkisian said. "That's the fun part. It's like, OK, let's see if what we do on a regular basis is good enough, and that's what we can find out."
