Texas Longhorns ready for the Paris Olympics: Ranking the medal hopes of the 30 Horns

The Paris Olympics will have a burnt-orange tinge, with 30 current or former University of Texas athletes competing in the 2024 Games from Friday to Aug. 11. That sets a record for the largest delegation UT has sent to a single Olympics, topping the 29 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Texas also will have seven coaches working in Paris: Carol Capitani (assistant coach, U.S. swimming), Matt Scoggin (coaching staff, U.S. diving), Erik Sullivan (team leader, U.S. men's volleyball), Bob Bowman (coaching staff, France swimming), Royal Ivey (head coach, South Sudan men's basketball), Edrick Floréal (coaching staff, Great Britain, Ireland and Saint Lucia track and field) and Jim Garnham (coaching staff, Germany track and field).

Let’s take a look at the athletes with UT ties, ranked by their chances to earn a medal:

30. Emelia Chatfield, Haiti track and field

Chatfield (women's 100-meter hurdles), who won the 2024 Big 12 indoor championship in the 60-meter hurdles, will try to win Haiti its first Olympic medal since 1928.

29. Angie Coe, Taiwan swimming

Coe (women's 200 individual medley), a UT sophomore, helped the Longhorns win the Big 12 championship last season by winning gold in the 800-meter relay.

28. Sara Kouskova, Czech Republic golf

Kouskova helped Texas to its fifth-place finish in the NCAA Championships in 2018 and became the first Czech to top the European women's tour money list in 2022.

27. Anna Elendt, Germany swimming

Elendt (100 breaststroke, 400 medley relay) holds the German national record for the 100 breaststroke and is competing in her second Olympics. She'll be a senior.

26. Mariam Abdul-Rashid, Canada track and field

Abdul-Rashid (women's 100-meter hurdles), 26, is in her prime, setting multiple personal bests this year in the 60- and 100-meter hurdles.

25. Yvonne Anderson, Serbia basketball

The former Texas point guard and the daughter of longtime college basketball coach Mike Anderson, is a natural-born American but will represent Serbia, where she plays professional basketball.

24. Alison Gibson, U.S. diving

Gibson (3-meter springboard diving), an Austin resident and a former NCAA champion, is in her second Olympics and her first in an individual competition.

23. David Johnston, U.S. swimming

Johnston (men's 1,500 freestyle, open water 10-kilometer), who'll be a UT senior, is an eight-time NCAA All-American. He sat out last season for the Longhorns to prep for the U.S. Olympic team.

22. Lanae-Tava Thomas, Jamaica track and field

Thomas (women's 200) earned All-American honors while helping Texas win the national team title in 2023.

21. Stacey Ann-Williams, Jamaica track and field

Williams (women's 400), an eight-time NCAA All-American at Texas, is in top form for Jamaica entering the Olympics. She won the recent World Athletics Continental Tour-Silver circuit stop in Switzerland.

20. Drew Kibler, U.S. swimming

Kibler (men's 800 freestyle relay) fell short of qualifying for Paris as an individual but is a two-time Olympian and boasts the second-fastest U.S. time in the 200 this year.

19. Aaron Shackell, U.S. swimming

Shackell (men's 400 frestyle), who'll be a UT sophomore, will make his Olympic debut for the United States alongside his younger sister Alex. Their father, Nicholas Shackell, also was an Olympic swimmer, having competed for Great Britain in the 100-meter freestyle in Atlanta in 1996.

T-18. Kaitlin Knifton, U.S. rowing

Knifton (women's four) is a two-time NCAA national champion at Texas. The McCallum High School graduate is making her U.S. Olympic debut after competing on the world youth circuit.

T-18. Daisy Mazzio-Manson, U.S. rowing

Manson (women's four) comes from a rowing family. Her father won bronze at the 1991 World Championships, her mom competed in the 1992 Olympics, and her older brother is a collegiate rower, too.

16. Caspar Corbeau, Netherlands swimming

Corbeau (men's 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke) is the reigning 200-meter breaststroke European champion.

15. Lulu Sun, New Zealand tennis

Sun was raised in Switzerland but is representing New Zealand in Paris. She clinched Texas' 2021 NCAA team national championship and is in the midst of her best professional season after a recent run to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

14. Ackelia Smith, Jamaica track and field

Smith (women's long jump, triple jump) is a two-time NCAA long jump champion and the UT record holder in the long jump. She recently won the Jamaican national championship in the event.

13. Julia Grosso, Canada soccer

Grosso, who was a 2020 Olympic gold medalist with Canada, is a former NCAA All-American who anchors the midfield for the Canadians, one of the Olympic medal favorites.

12. Erin Gemmell, U.S. swimming

Gemmell (women's 200 freestyle, 800 freestyle relay), who'll be a UT sophomore, is a rising U.S. star who has already earned All-American honors in the 800 freestyle relay.

11. Rhasidat Adeleke, Ireland track and field

Adeleke (women's 400, mixed 1,600 relay) is the Irish record holder and an NCAA champion with Texas who has come within 0.07 of becoming just the fourth woman this year to crack 49 seconds in the 400.

10. Luke Hobson, U.S. swimming

Hobson (men's 200 freestyle, 800 freestyle relay), who'll be a senior at Texas, won the 200 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

9. Julien Alfred, Saint Lucia track and field

Alfred (women's 100, 200) is arguably the fastest starter in the world. She set a collegiate record in the 60-meter indoors as a Longhorn.

8. Carson Foster, U.S. swimming

Foster (men's 200, 400 individual medley) won an NCAA championship with Texas and is the reigning U.S. champion in both IMs. He anchors a loaded American squad.

7. Chiaka Ogbogu, U.S. volleyball

Ogbogu (women's indoor volleyball), a former UT middle blocker, left the Longhorns as the program's all-time leader in blocks. She's hoping to help the U.S. win a second straight gold medal.

6. Scottie Scheffler, U.S. golf

Scheffler is the world’s top-ranked golfer and earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas in finance, a smart move for a player who already has almost $71 million in career earnings.

5. Leo Neugebauer, Germany track and field

Neugebauer (decathlon) is the German record-holder and a multitime national champion at Texas. He's one of the favorites for a medal in Paris.

4. Ryan Crouser, U.S. track and field

Crouser (men's shot put), a four-time NCAA champion at Texas, is seeking a third consecutive gold medal for the United States.

3. Kevin Durant, U.S. basketball

Durant, the former NCAA player of the year for Texas and a future NBA Hall of Famer, hopes to become the first man to win four U.S. Olympic basketball gold medals.

2. Tara Davis-Woodhall, U.S. track and field

Davis (women's long jump) is that national record-holder in the long jump and was a national champion at Texas. The California native won silver at last year’s World Championships.

1. Hubert Kos, Hungary swimming

Kos (men's 200 backstroke, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke), who'll be a UT junior, followed new Longhorns swimming coach Bob Bowman from Arizona State this offseason. He's the reigning world champion as well as the NCAA record-holder in the 200 back.
