Texas' Leo Neugebauer wins decathlon silver at 2024 Paris Olympics: Results, points breakdown

Former Texas track and field standout Leo Neugebauer won silver in the decathlon — arguably the most difficult individual Olympic sport — on Saturday.

Neugebauer ― who entered the 2024 Paris Olympics the No. 3 decathlon athlete in the world ― won silver for Germany, finishing behind Norway's Markus Rooth. The Olympic decathlon includes competitions in the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-meter, 110-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1500 meters over two days.

Rooth won the event with 8,796 points, while Neugebauer had 8,748 points. A perfect score in the decathlon would be 10,000 points.

Neugebauer, 24, competed in the 2023 NCAA Championships for the Longhorns, setting a new collegiate record for the decathlon with 8,836 points. Kyle Garland set the old record in 2022 (8,720). He also won the 2024 NCAA outdoor national championship, setting the world record in the discus throw with a distance of 57.70 meters. Neugebauer led for the first eight events.
