Texas football received another coveted commitment on Saturday during its massive recruiting weekend on campus

But head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff hope the pledge from five-star running back Jerrick Gibson is just the first of many to come from a weekend in which the Longhorns welcomed most of their top priorities for the 2024 class.

Gibson gives Sarkisian and running backs coach Tashard Choice one of the nation’s top running back recruit for the second consecutive year, following the signing of C.J. Baxter last season. A 5-foot-10, 200-pounder who’s moved around during his prep career, Gibson is a stocky runner with good balance and great vision who boasts 4.5 speed. He spent his freshman season in Gainesville, Florida, before breaking out as an all-district star at Munday’s Mill High School in Jonesboro, Georgia, as a sophomore in 2021. Last season, Gibson transferred to IMG Academy in Florida and has excelled at various skills showcases throughout the offseason.

Gibson picked Texas over offers from SEC schools such as Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

The commitment of Gibson follows the recent pledge of four-star running back Christian Clark of Scottsdale, Arizona, which would seem to fulfill any running-back goals for the 2024 recruiting class. Texas now has five players pledged to its 2024 recruiting class.

Who will commit next to Texas?

With six players now pledged for the 2024 class, who could come next for Texas?

The Longhorns have heavily pursued four-star receiver Parker Livingston from Frisco Liberty High School north of Dallas, and the 6-3, 185-pounder is expected to make  decision within the next week. Five-star cornerback Kobe Black, a 6-foot, 190-pounder from Waco Connally High School, is on campus this weekend for his official visit. Four-star defensive back Corian Gipson is also among the visitors to Texas this weekend after an official visit to Clemson earlier this week, and Texas hopes to secure a pledge from the 6-foot, 170-pounder from Lancaster after Clemson failed to do so.

The biggest prize in the recruiting class remains Colin Simmons, an edge rusher from Class 6A Division I state champion Duncanville and the top-ranked defensive player in the nation in 247Sports’ composite rankings. The 6-3, 225-pound Simmons had a school-record 22.5 sack a year ago while earning multiple awards, and he’s being pursued by virtually every collegiate powerhouse in the nation.
